Schlangen combines hiking trails and digital cycling routes with remarkable evidence of village history. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the local options: the S-Weg is a circular hiking trail, while five cycling routes in Schlangen are available digitally. The municipality also has a village museum and an archaeological adventure trail.

Hiking and cycling in Schlangen

The S-Weg is about 21 kilometres long and forms a circular route around Schlangen, Kohlstädt and Oesterholz-Haustenbeck. The route passes through a varied cultural landscape and several nature reserves. Look for a white S inside a circle on a black background. If you plan to follow the trail, check local notices for any temporary diversions.

Five digital cycling routes in Schlangen start and finish in the municipality. They range in length from 15.7 to 43.5 kilometres. They are not signposted, but are available digitally as GPX files; check the latest information in the Teuto-Navigator. The basic options therefore differ: a marked circular hiking trail on the one hand, and several digitally guided cycling routes on the other.

The Senneradweg is another option, covering a wider area. It is about 82 kilometres long, runs around the Senne military training area, and touches or passes through the municipality of Schlangen. In total, it runs through or alongside eight cities and municipalities. For the latest route details, check with the route operator. Unlike the five cycling routes in Schlangen, this is a longer route that crosses municipal boundaries, with Schlangen as one part of it.

Village history and archaeology

A remarkable work of art is located in the Romanesque tower of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Schlangen: the 13th-century Christophorus Secco. The wall painting is considered the oldest depiction of Saint Christopher in Westphalia and was rediscovered during renovation work in 1970. It can only be viewed occasionally; there is no regular public access.

Since 1993, the Schlangen Village Museum has been housed in Haus Fischer. The building was constructed in 1889 from local limestone rubble. Its construction date, building material and current use as a museum give the village’s history a tangible architectural connection. The Archaeological Adventure Trail in Oesterholz-Haustenbeck has a different focus: two life-size reconstructed burial mounds illustrate Bronze Age burial customs. The church, museum and adventure trail thus offer different ways to explore history, from a medieval wall painting to the Bronze Age.

Lippe as a wider travel destination

Across the wider destination of Lippe, the hiking trail network extends for around 2,000 kilometres. It includes part of European long-distance path E1, as well as the award-winning hiking routes “Hermannshöhen” and “Hansaweg.” This regional network provides a broader setting for hiking trips, while the S-Weg is the specific circular hiking option around Schlangen, Kohlstädt and Oesterholz-Haustenbeck.

Lippe’s cultural history also extends beyond the history of the village of Schlangen: seven historic town centres are characterised by Renaissance buildings. The Externsteine are a cultural and natural monument in the heart of Lippe. In Lemgo, the Weser Renaissance Museum presents the cultural history of the Weser region in the 16th and 17th centuries. These themes add further facets of the wider region to the local highlights, without equating them with the sights in Schlangen.

This gives Schlangen a clear focus as a destination: it combines a marked hiking route and digital cycling routes with a village museum, a wall painting and a Bronze Age theme.
