Lügde combines a historic town centre with an annual Easter tradition and a park landscape on the edge of the old town. The city wall, St. Kilian’s Church and Falkenhagen Monastery provide tangible points of reference for the town’s architectural history; Emmerauenpark and several circular trails add outdoor destinations to the cultural attractions. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether the Easter tradition, historic buildings, or parks and hiking should be the main focus.

Old Town, Architectural History and the Easter Wheel Run

The city wall, around 1,500 metres long, is completely preserved and surrounds the entire historic town centre. It formed part of the former town fortifications and served to protect against flooding. Defensive towers and half-timbered houses are also part of the historic town centre. Together, these buildings paint a picture of protection and everyday life side by side: the wall tells not only of the town’s fortifications, but also of how it dealt with flooding.

St. Kilian’s Church is a Romanesque church built around 1150, before the town was founded. It is considered a landmark of Lügde and is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Westphalia. The Dechenheim is housed in the town’s former fire station. Falkenhagen Monastery, a well-preserved monastic complex, is also located in the Lügde district of Falkenhagen. The former dormitory, dating from 1509, is considered the oldest dated half-timbered house in Lippe. In Lügde, you can therefore encounter different examples of regional architectural history, from Romanesque church architecture to a dated half-timbered building.

The Easter Wheel Run may be a special reason to visit. It takes place every year on the evening of Easter Sunday, the first day of Easter, and is organised by the Osterdechenverein Lügde e.V. In the wider Lippe travel region, the run is recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage and is a firmly established part of Lügde’s tradition. If you are planning your trip around it, check the event details in advance, as logistics may change.

Emmerauenpark and Circular Trails

Emmerauenpark, a park landscape with an adventure playground, the “Ankerplatz” café and beer garden, and “Emmer Beach” with swimming and beach areas, lies on the edge of the historic old town. All paths in the park are accessible by wheelchair. The park therefore offers a range of ways to spend time outdoors in addition to its natural setting. It is advisable to check seasonal opening arrangements for the café, beer garden and swimming area before your visit.

The short town walk through the town centre is an easy 2.62-kilometre circular route. The Klosterweg Falkenhagen quality trail is also easy, but longer at 4.90 kilometres; it starts and finishes at Falkenhagen Monastery. You can choose between a shorter loop through the town centre and a longer monastery loop. Check the route details before setting off, as they may change.

The Osterbergweg quality trail starts and ends at the car park by St. Kilian’s Church on Höxterstraße in Lügde. The route’s points of interest also include views from a landscape lounger and a shelter over the Lügde and Bad Pyrmont valley basins. This adds views over both valley basins to the range of circular trails.
