Salt History and Town Life
The three graduation towers are the Erlebnisgradierwerk, the Uhrenturm graduation tower and the ParkstraĂźe graduation tower. The Erlebnisgradierwerk has a passage with small resting alcoves and a brine mist chamber. A weekly market with a wide selection of fresh regional produce takes place at Salzhof every Tuesday and Saturday. Also at Salzhof, the Salt Boiling Monument commemorates the saltworks that stood there until 1926. The monument was erected in 1988 for the town’s 500th anniversary and donated by the Bad Salzuflen municipal utilities.
Another stop in the town’s history is the permanent exhibition in the Wandelhalle. It presents more than 250 exhibits and information from different eras spanning nearly 1,000 years of town history. Topics include salt, brine and starch; salt production from the Middle Ages to the 20th century; the healing properties of the mineral springs; and industry shaped by international influences. The exhibition therefore brings together different aspects of the town’s history: raw materials and production, mineral springs and economic development.
Old Town and Half-Timbered Architecture
A historic walking tour of the old town leads to places such as the historic town hall, the Paulinenquelle spring at Salzhof, the Katzenturm and Haus Backs at Hafermarkt. The old town features richly decorated Weser Renaissance half-timbered houses, distinctive mayors’ houses and the historic town hall; houses from the 16th and 17th centuries can also be seen there. Haus Backs is a particularly richly decorated half-timbered house and is considered one of the most photographed houses in the old town. It is also said to be the last house in Ostwestfalen-Lippe to have been richly decorated in this way. Landscape Garden and Nature
The landscape garden was laid out in the style of English parks. Extensive lawns, mature trees and groups of trees shape the grounds. The garden also has a wildlife enclosure covering around 29,000 square metres, home to fallow deer and Cameroon sheep. As the animal population may change, do not count on seeing any particular animals as a fixed part of your plans.
Rowing boats are available on the Kurparksee in the landscape garden; availability may be seasonal. The garden thus offers a range of options: a walk through open green spaces, views of mature trees and—depending on the season—a boat ride on the lake.
Hiking Trails for Different Levels
Bad Salzuflen offers four local circular hiking trails, two trails in the VitalWanderWelt, the Karl-Bachler-Weg and an accessible trail, with varying levels of difficulty. Check current trail conditions before setting out. This makes it possible to choose a route based on the type of trail and the level of challenge you want, without treating all routes as the same.
There are also circular routes between 20 and 40 kilometres developed jointly by Bad Salzuflen, Herford, Lage and Leopoldshöhe. Some are suitable for families and have gentle gradients, while others are challenging and sporty. This distinction helps when choosing a route: distance alone does not tell you everything about its profile.
