Frenkhausen is a quiet holiday settlement in the Sauerland hills. Its traffic-calmed surroundings and the forests nearby shape the area; walks and outdoor activities suit its character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider whether peaceful days, cycling or seasonal excursions should be the focus of your stay.
Cycling and recreational areas
Frenkhausen has a cycle route connection to Meschede-Olpe, providing access to the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route and Sauerland Cycle Ring networks. Cycling therefore complements the area's forested, walking-oriented character with another focus for planning your stay. Check local route conditions before setting off.
Nearby recreational areas include the Henne, Sorpe and Möhnesee reservoirs. Fort Fun and winter sports areas in the wider Frenkhausen area offer additional seasonal excursion options. The choices range from relaxing by the reservoirs to activities with an explicitly seasonal focus.
Routes and excursions in the wider Meschede destination
In the wider Meschede destination, a variety of routes connect urban, lakeside and scenic experiences. The Henne Boulevard links the lake and the town over two kilometres and is accessible, with a fitness trail. The Meschede Höhenwanderweg, marked with an “M”, offers a different kind of route: the circular trail runs through the town area, from Erflinghausen via Grevenstein and Freienohl to Eversberg, and offers views across the region. The routes therefore differ in where they take you: the boulevard links the lake and the town, while the Höhenwanderweg passes through several villages. Another long-distance hiking route is the Sauerland Forest Route: it runs for 240 kilometres from Iserlohn to Marsberg and passes through Arnsberg Forest Nature Park in Meschede; one access point is in Eversberg at Buchsplitt.
Those who would like to include historic townscapes can explore the Eversberg Old Town Trail. The circular route is about 2.5 kilometres long and passes the historic town hall and half-timbered houses. The castle ruins offer views across Eversberg; the trail also leads to an adventure playground shaped like a knight’s castle. Its town views, lookout and play area make this circular route a different option from the longer Meschede Höhenwanderweg.
There are also different options at Lake Henne. Berghausen swimming cove offers swimming, stand-up paddleboarding at the water sports centre, sailing and rowing. Pirate Cove is a free outdoor adventure playground for families, with a pirate ship, climbing and play equipment, and an inclusive area accessible to all. For those who prefer a walk, the Wogenweg runs along the lakeshore: themed poems alternate at twelve steles, and the route connects nature and culture.
You can then choose which place and type of activity you would like to shape your stay, without combining the routes, swimming options and excursion destinations into a single itinerary.
