Freienohl lies in the Upper Ruhr Valley on the southern edge of the Arnsberg Forest. From Küppel, the view extends across the Arnsberg Forest and Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature parks, as well as over the Freienohler Ruhr-S. Küppel is 413 metres above sea level. Rebuilt in 2022, the Küppel Tower in Freienohl once again offers views of the Ruhr Valley. The views, river landscape and forest give the town a distinctive landscape character.

The Ruhr Valley, cycling route and local history

The Ruhr Valley Cycle Route passes through Freienohl. Its local section follows a river landscape with a natural character and high ecological and recreational value. The cycle route offers a tangible connection to the river landscape for visitors exploring Freienohl, while Küppel provides a viewpoint of its own. When planning your ride, it is worth checking the current route, as well as surface and signage conditions.

The sights recommended to visitors also cover a range of themes: these include the Old District Office, the Old Cemetery, park monuments, churches and chapels. Thus, alongside the landscape and cycle route, local history, places of remembrance and sacred sites are also part of Freienohl’s character. Which of these places you focus on depends on whether you are more interested in historic buildings, memorial sites, or churches and chapels; there is no need to visit them all as part of one itinerary.

Freienohl also has its own rail connection.

Meschede: more perspectives

The wider destination of Meschede is also home to the Bee Discovery Trail in Freienohl. Along the circular route, seven information boards explain bees and beekeeping; at the end, there is an observation hive with a live bee colony. The trail adds a specific nature-study theme to the viewpoints and cycle route.

The Meschede Heights Hiking Trail offers another, longer route: marked with an “M,” the circular trail passes through the Meschede municipal area, from Erflinghausen via Grevenstein and Freienohl to Eversberg, with views across the region. Freienohl is explicitly part of the route described; the places named are several stops along the way.

Meschede offers a different experience at Hennesee. At the Berghausen bathing cove, visitors can swim, go stand-up paddleboarding at the water sports station, sail and row. The Wogenweg runs along the lake shore, with twelve steles displaying changing poems on different themes. The wider destination therefore offers a choice of both water activities and a walking route combining nature and culture. Another option is the Henne Boulevard in Meschede: stretching two kilometres, it connects the lake and town and passes Hennepark and the open Henne at Winziger Platz. The route is barrier-free and features a fitness trail. It therefore complements the water sports available at the bathing cove and the Wogenweg with its poetry steles, offering a route between town and lake.
