There are several ways to discover Euskirchen: visit the town museum between the Old Town and New Town, explore hiking and cycling routes, or take a stroll through the town. The town also offers several rail connections for getting there.
Local history and art in public spaces
The Euskirchen Town Museum tells the story of the town and its districts. Its account of the town’s history spans the Roman era to the present day. Located directly between the Old Town and New Town, the museum links two central parts of the town and offers insight into their history. Regular special exhibitions complement the collection, exploring topics in art, culture and local heritage, with both historical and contemporary perspectives. If an exhibition is important to your plans, check in advance what will be on during your visit.
Outdoors, Euskirchen’s Art Mile on Kölner Straße features eleven works by renowned artists. It has been in place since 2008. Another trace of the past can be seen in the surviving sections of the old town wall and three former defensive towers. The pedestrian zone within the medieval town wall ring is also home to department stores, numerous independent shops and many cafés. Open-air art, preserved fortifications and the pedestrian zone’s shops each add their own character to the townscape.
The Euskirchen Historical Town Guide is designed as a virtual tour. You can start at any stop and continue from there through the town. For a glimpse into working life in the past, visit the MĂĽller Cloth Factory in Euskirchen-Kuchenheim: as the machines are still operational, demonstrations of the working processes and conditions of the time are held regularly.
Hiking and cycling around Euskirchen
An EifelSpur and three EifelSchleifen trails have been established within the town area around the Steinbach Dam and Flamersheim Forest as part of the Nordeifel hiking network. For a hike with more specific details, Stage 4 of the Roman Canal Hiking Trail is another option. It runs from Euskirchen-Kreuzweingarten to Rheinbach, covers 16 kilometres and takes four to five hours. The route climbs from 168 to 273 metres, is rated easy and can be walked in either direction. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
If you prefer to explore by bike, the Water Castles Route offers a 45-kilometre loop around Euskirchen. Along the way, you can explore the varied history of the castles in the surrounding area. Euskirchen’s cycling and hiking station makes a suitable starting and finishing point for hikes and bike rides. The two route options are quite different: the Water Castles Route is a cycling loop, while the Roman Canal stage is a longer hiking route with a stated walking time.
Getting there and finding your way
Euskirchen’s centrally located station offers regular connections to Cologne, Bonn and Bad Münstereifel, as well as to the Eifel via the Cologne–Trier line. Euskirchen also has a well-developed local public transport network, including the distinctive Stadtverkehr Euskirchen city buses. Timetables are not included here, so check current connections for your travel dates, especially if you plan to combine train and bus travel.
