Olef combines a protected historic townscape with hiking trails through the Oleftal. A triangular square forms the heart of the village centre; forest paths lead uphill to Kuckucksley. The village’s architectural history and opportunities to enjoy nature thus offer distinct themes to consider when planning a trip.
Village Square, Half-Timbered Houses and Parish Church
Olef’s cohesive townscape has enjoyed special protection as a conservation area since 1987. The historic centre has changed little since the 19th century. At its heart is the triangular square, around which half-timbered houses are grouped. They were built after a fire in 1697. This sequence of events gives the village centre a clear historical context: the square defines the centre, while the houses tell the story of its reconstruction.
The Catholic parish church of St John the Baptist is also one of the village’s defining historical features. Its origins date back to the 13th century. Notable features include a baptismal font made of Namur bluestone and a rare two-tiered altar. Alongside the half-timbered architecture, sacred art thus offers another distinct cultural and historical perspective on Olef.
Another unique feature of the historic centre is Germany’s only railway crossing over a village square. It adds an unusual connection to railway history to the townscape, without implying anything about current train services.
The antiques and crafts market in Olef’s historic surroundings takes place in August. Exact dates may vary, so check them before planning your trip.
Hiking and Cycling Routes Around Olef
Winding forest paths lead through the Oleftal and uphill to Kuckucksley. One specific option for winter is the Oleftal Tour (13): this easy winter hike is 8.0 kilometres long, loops around Olef and offers views across the Eifel in winter. The stated walking time is 2 hours 30 minutes. This helps you estimate how much time to allow for the tour; also check seasonal conditions before setting out.
The Eifelsteig and Felsenweg hiking trails, as well as the Tälerroute and EifelRadSchleifen cycling routes, are signposted at Olef railway station. The Olef–Gemünd and Olef–Schleiden stages of the Oleftalbahn are also signposted. These hiking, cycling and route-stage options offer different themes to consider when planning a trip. They should be considered separately when choosing between a hike and a cycle ride; this does not mean that they form a combined circular route.
Olef Within the Wider Destination of Schleiden
Olef is a district of Schleiden. For a hike with a different time commitment, the EifelSpur “Sun, Moon and Stars” in the wider destination of Schleiden offers a point of comparison: it is also 8 kilometres long and is described as an easy hike taking 2 hours. Its stated walking time is half an hour shorter than that of the Oleftal Tour. The EifelSpur passes through a landscape with distinctive flora and fauna and offers views of the starry sky in the Eifel International Dark Sky Park. The two routes remain separate options; comparing their lengths and walking times helps you estimate the time required for each.
Another highlight in the wider destination of Schleiden is the Eifel National Park Centre in Schleiden. It is home to “Wildnis(t)räume,” an accessible, interactive nature exhibition for people of all ages. The centre is open year-round and is the starting point for regular ranger-led tours through Eifel National Park. If you plan to join a ranger tour, check the dates in advance.
