The accessible nature trail at the former Eifelhöhen Clinic lets visitors experience the Kalkeifel region with all their senses. Twelve stops explore calcareous grasslands, a historic garden, a pond and Roman history, along with views of Steinfeld Abbey. Nature and history are thus brought together along the trail.

Trail design and Roman traces

The trail has no steps and offers circular routes with varying gradients. Guide edges, several Braille information panels and tactile models complement the trail design. The Eifelhöhen Clinic also has a café-restaurant and an accessible toilet. Check local access conditions before your visit; accessibility details may change if facilities or trail conditions are modified.

MARCOMAGUS is a specific link to Marmagen’s Roman history: the ancient settlement is recorded on the Tabula Peutingeriana. Archaeological investigations located it beside the Roman road from Cologne to Trier, between Marmagen and Nettersheim.

Market, daily life and crafts in Marmagen

A weekly market is held on Marmagen’s village square, Eiffelplatz, on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Market frequency and participating vendors may change; check the date locally if the market is important to your day’s plans. The village also has bakeries, butcher shops, restaurants, a petrol station, shops and other everyday amenities.

Marmagen also has a centuries-old craft tradition and a concentration of construction-related businesses. Local crafts are therefore another aspect of the village, alongside its landscape and Roman history. Individual businesses and visitor offerings may change.

More trails in the wider Nettersheim destination

The wider Nettersheim destination offers further archaeological and landscape-related attractions. In the Archaeological Landscape Park in Nettersheim, parts of a Roman settlement and the Roman road have been made visible to visitors on site.

A circular trail of about 4.5 kilometres, with eight stops, starts at the Eifel Nature Centre. Partial reconstructions bring the results of excavations in the vicus of Nettersheim to life. The format is also an important consideration when choosing a tour: Via Velo is a 22.5-kilometre cycling route. With a journey time of about two to three hours, it can be considered a half-day excursion; the Eifel Nature Centre and Tourist Information in Nettersheim can be chosen as a starting point. Via Velo is therefore approximately five times as long as the roughly 4.5-kilometre circular trail in the Archaeological Landscape Park.

The 20-kilometre Eifel Herb Trail leads from the Eifelsteig in Nettersheim to Bad Münstereifel and introduces hikers to local herbs and plants through all the senses. From the Eifel Nature Centre in Nettersheim, orchid meadows, Roman temples and fossil-rich areas can be reached on foot or by bike via various discovery trails. Nettersheim is accessible by train on the Cologne–Trier Eifel line.
