Frohngau brings together a historic village center, a distinctive carnival tradition and a cycling connection on the Erft Cycle Route. This makes it a destination for a range of travel interests: local history, local traditions or arriving by bicycle. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether to focus your stay on Frohngau itself or on other destinations within the wider travel destination of Nettersheim.

Historic Village Center and Village Meeting Place

St. Margaret’s Church, the rectory and the former school are grouped together in the historic village center. The former school building is now home to the Frohngau Village Meeting Place, Alte Schule, with a village shop, cafeteria and guest rooms. In this way, the former school building connects local history with its present-day use. Individual offerings may change. If you plan to use any of them during your stay, check availability in advance.

Carnival Tradition and Cycling Connection

Frohngau preserves an old carnival tradition: the Äezebär, wrapped in pea straw, represents winter, while a queen symbolizes the coming spring. This seasonal contrast sets the tradition apart from the architectural features of the village center. If you would like to experience the tradition, check the specific event dates before your trip.

Cyclists can reach Frohngau on the Erft Cycle Route. Since route conditions and signage may change, check the current route before setting off.

More Destinations in the Wider Travel Destination of Nettersheim

At the Archaeological Landscape Park in Nettersheim, visitors can see parts of a Roman settlement and the Roman road laid out across the site. The circular trail starts at the Eifel Nature Center and passes eight stations. Partial reconstructions bring the results of excavations in the vicus of Nettersheim to life; the loop is about 4.5 kilometers long.

Via Velo is also a circular route, but considerably longer: it is 22.5 kilometers long and takes about two to three hours to cycle. You can start at the Eifel Nature Center and Tourist Information Office in Nettersheim. Comparing it with the roughly 4.5-kilometer trail in the Landscape Park highlights the difference in scale.

The Eifel Herbal Trail is a 20-kilometer hiking route. It leads from the Eifelsteig in Nettersheim to Bad Münstereifel and introduces hikers to local herbs and plants through all the senses. Compared with Via Velo, both the mode of travel and the main theme differ. The route formats also differ: Via Velo is a loop, while the Herbal Trail leads from the Eifelsteig in Nettersheim to Bad Münstereifel. For routes of a similar length, it is therefore also worth considering whether you want a loop or a connection between two places.

From the Eifel Nature Center in Nettersheim, orchid meadows, Roman temples and fossil-rich areas can be reached on foot or by bicycle via various trails. Nettersheim is also accessible by train on the Cologne–Trier Eifel line.
