Mechernich combines insights into rural life with Roman traces, historic townscapes and outdoor activities. During your stay, you can focus on culture or add individual activities: the open-air museum and the Eifel Aqueduct represent different historical themes, while the wildlife park, circular routes and seasonal tobogganing offer other highlights.

Cultural history in buildings and Roman traces

At the LVR Open-Air Museum in Kommern – Rhineland Museum of Folklore – around 75 buildings offer insights into rural life from the 15th to the 19th century. They include farmhouses, windmills, workshops and communal village buildings. The different types of buildings give a museum visit a broad thematic scope, from farming life and crafts to buildings used by the community.

The Eifel Aqueduct was probably built at the end of the first century AD. It is one of the largest Roman structures north of the Alps and runs for more than 25 kilometres through the Mechernich municipal area. You can view a cross-section of the main line to Cologne right by the road “Am Römerkanal.” Alongside the long route through the municipal area, a single visible section and its specific location also provide points of interest.

Another landmark is the Old Church of St. John: it stands high above the town and is visible from afar. As a landmark, it provides a clear contrast with the Eifel Aqueduct, which runs across much of the municipal area: here, a single building shapes the townscape; there, an extensive Roman structure does so.

Kommern and Satzvey: townscape and events

The historic centre of Kommern invites you to stroll around. Kommern is the largest settlement in the municipal area after Mechernich; its most distinctive feature is the Rhineland’s largest intact ensemble of half-timbered buildings. Other highlights include a castle dating from the 15th to the 18th century, a neo-Gothic church and numerous places to eat. The town centre therefore brings together half-timbered buildings, other historic structures and places to stop for a meal. Individual buildings may have their own access rules.

Satzvey Castle also hosts numerous themed events. The year-round programme includes, among other things, a children’s summer theatre, a Witches’ Night, a murder mystery dinner and a Christmas celebration at the castle. These examples show that the events cover different themes and formats; check the specific dates before your trip.

Walks and outdoor activities

Kommern Wildlife Park combines a walking route with several facilities on site. Spacious paths, quiet resting places and viewing platforms at the feeding areas invite you to explore the park on foot. The facilities also include a large nature playground with a zip line, climbing frames and slides. A walk through the wildlife park and time at the playground therefore offer different ways to spend your visit.

The “Mechernicher 8” route connects sights and leisure facilities via two circular routes. The two routes can be combined, so you can choose based on the available routes and the destinations you would like to include.

At the Eifeltor Adventure Park in Kommern, you can go tobogganing on a 680-metre-long track. The seasonal operating period runs from 1 April to 31 October; check whether the track is open before travelling. This activity is therefore available at different times of the year from the townscapes and cultural sites described as permanent attractions.
