In Wetter (Ruhr), half-timbered houses, castle history and a range of museum topics come together. There are also viewpoints and a spot overlooking Lake Harkort. You can plan your stay around your interests, with time for local history, collections or a break by the lake.

Freiheit: Half-timbered houses and local history

Freiheit is one of the city's most distinctive and defining places. The Fünf-Giebel-Eck, an ensemble of half-timbered houses dating from the 17th century, stands on its grounds. Ruhr sandstone “time stones” use QR codes to share information about people who have shaped Wetter, including Friedrich Harkort and Gustav Vorsteher. Freiheit also has a play area known as the Sensory Garden. Half-timbered houses, personal memories and the designated play area give this place several themes to explore during a visit.

Castle ruins, a viewpoint and a memorial

The castle in Wetter was built around 1250. Parts of the castle ruins are freely accessible to visitors all day, and the side tower is a well-known viewpoint. Below the ruins is the newly built town terrace, an oak viewing deck. A staircase with a new handrail beside the castle ruins leads to it. This connects the castle's long history with another named viewpoint. The Harkort Tower on Harkort Hill adds a distinctive feature of its own: it was built in 1884 using private donations in memory of Friedrich Harkort. While the historic building itself is the focus at the castle, the tower commemorates an influential figure.

Museums with different focuses

The Henriette Davidis Museum traces the life of Henriette Davidis, who became a successful cookbook author in the 19th century. The museum is in Wengern, within Wetter (Ruhr). At the Bleistahl Museum, you can see more than 300 vehicle models spanning six decades. The two museums have distinctly different themes: one focuses on a biography, the other on an extensive collection of models. Alongside the history of Freiheit and the memorial sites associated with Friedrich Harkort, they offer a selection for a variety of cultural and historical interests.

A break by Lake Harkort and regional highlights

Wooden benches at the Seeplatz offer views of Lake Harkort. Cyclists on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route are encouraged to stop here for a rest. So alongside the castle ruins, half-timbered houses and museums, there is also a specific place to take a break with a view of the lake. You can include this view of the landscape in your plans alongside the cultural themes, while keeping their different focuses distinct.

Looking beyond Wetter (Ruhr), the wider Ennepe-Ruhr District destination offers more activities. Hiking and jogging are possible at the Glörtalsperre reservoir; during the warm summer months, you can also swim there in clean, natural water. In Ennepetal, guided tours of the Klutert Cave are offered several times a day. On some days, physically demanding adventure tours are also available; children's groups can take part in a fossil workshop and a cave visit. These examples broaden the picture of the Ennepe-Ruhr District destination without attributing its activities to Wetter (Ruhr).
