Gevelsberg combines a valley setting shaped by the Ennepe River and surrounding hills with a 330-hectare city forest and a carnival tradition dating back more than 200 years. You can focus on strenuous hikes, a leisurely stroll, local history or an event date.
City Forest and Trails in the Valley
The course of the Ennepe through the valley and the surrounding hills shape the city. Gevelsberg lies between the low hills of the Ruhr region and the mountainous uplands of the Sauerland. Extensive woodland close to the city center is part of the local recreation area. The 330-hectare City Forest offers opportunities for strenuous hiking.
The first stage of the Wappenweg trail leads through the City Forest and the Buntebach Valley, alternating between woodland and meadows. The “Über den Klutertberg” circular trail also passes through the City Forest and offers views over Gevelsberg towards the Ruhr region. When choosing between the trails, you can decide whether you prefer alternating woodland and meadows or views towards the Ruhr region. Check current trail conditions before setting out. For a leisurely stroll, Stefansbachtal Recreation Park is another option.
The City Forest also includes an area designated as a Flora-Fauna Habitat. It adds an option for nature enthusiasts to the range of hiking opportunities.
Carnival Tradition and Weekly Market
The family-friendly Gevelsberg traditional carnival takes place every year from Friday to Tuesday on the last weekend in June and is more than 200 years old. Almost all of the food and drink stalls have been run by local clubs for generations. The carnival grounds have gradients of up to 12 percent; take this terrain into account when planning your visit. Also check the specific event dates before your trip.
The Gevelsberg weekly market takes place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings at VendĂ´mer Platz. Stalls offer fruit and vegetables, some organically grown, fresh meat, fish and dairy products, as well as honey. The selection may vary between vendors. If visiting the market is important to you, plan your stay around one of the market days and check the current schedule before setting out.
Art, Local History and Culture
In the former monastery area, many surviving historic houses have been protected as listed buildings since 1989 under the “Elberfelder Straße/Altes Dorf” conservation-area ordinance. Janusz Hajduk-Gubalke created Gevelsberg’s city landmark in 1989 to integrate contemporary art into the cityscape. The walk-through landmark refers to the industrial tradition and the tension between nature and the environment. Those interested in different historical periods can consider the conservation area and the city landmark as distinct facets of Gevelsberg.
The cultural program includes theater performances, art exhibitions and music events across a range of genres. The works of art include Christel Lechner’s “Alltagsmenschen” sculptures, installed in the city center. Filmriss Kino is housed in the historic Saalbau Buschmann, built in 1874, and has been part of Gevelsberg’s cultural life since 2003. Alongside a weekly changing film program, it offers music and cabaret events, readings, exhibitions, breakfast matinées, and theater for all ages.
The Heimatstube exhibition includes mementos of former clubs, notable places and people, as well as local customs, especially the Gevelsberg carnival. The historical city tour focuses on Archbishop and Imperial Administrator Engelbert, who died on November 7, 1225, in a sunken lane in Gevelsberg. The tour also shares anecdotes and stories from more recent times; check booking details and dates in advance. Village tours are offered during the warmer months. Check current dates in advance.
