Hattingen combines the history of ironworking with historic sites and views across the Ruhr Valley. Three different perspectives are available for your stay: the HenrichshĂĽtte, the old town, and Blankenstein with its castle, ruins and garden paths.
Industrial History at the HenrichshĂĽtte
The Henrichshütte was founded in 1854 and is one of the Ruhr region’s oldest ironworks. Its blast furnace is a monument and the centrepiece of the industrial museum. The history of the ironworks and a tangible testament to ironworking are at the heart of this Hattingen attraction.
On the “Path of Iron,” visitors can follow the flow of materials from ore, coke and limestone to molten pig iron. This sequence provides a clear thread through the visit, tracing the journey from raw materials to finished pig iron. Those with a particular interest in industrial heritage will find a clear thematic focus here, while the old town’s historic sites reveal another side of Hattingen.
The Henrichshütte is also a prominent landmark for cyclists: it is junction 86 and part of the Industrial Heritage Cycle Route. The “From Ruhr to Ruhr” cycle route also starts there. If you plan to take either route, check the operator’s information before setting off.
Historic Sites in Hattingen
The Bügeleisenhaus (Iron House) was built in 1611 and now houses the local history association’s museum. The Old Town Hall tells a different story of construction and use: it was built in 1576 on the site of the town’s meat hall, served as a local history museum from 1932, and has been used as a municipal cultural centre since 1933. The two buildings therefore offer different ways to explore Hattingen’s history.
The church square also has a distinctive historic feature: its medieval layout has been preserved. Near Steinhagen, the rusting steel sculptures “Die Eisenmänner” (The Iron Men) stand beside the town wall. They symbolise the struggle to keep Hattingen as a steelmaking location and connect with the industrial history that can be experienced at the Henrichshütte.
Views and Paths in Blankenstein
From the platform on the tower of Blankenstein Castle, the view stretches across the Ruhr Valley and Blankenstein’s historic centre. Another destination is the Isenburg ruins, dating from 1200–1225. The climb is steep and strenuous; from the top, there are views over the Ruhr meander and Hattingen. These two viewpoints offer different perspectives, each with its own historic setting.
If you are looking for green spaces as well as viewpoints, you can include Gethmann’s Garden in Blankenstein. It dates from the 19th century, and its winding paths invite you to walk and stroll. This offers several ways to enjoy the outdoors: a strenuous climb to the ruins, views from the castle platform, and walks along the garden paths.
When looking for hotels in Hattingen, you can choose the focus of your stay: industrial heritage at the HenrichshĂĽtte, historic sites in the town centre, or views and garden paths in Blankenstein. This choice helps you organise the places you visit according to your interests without grouping the different attractions into a single type of excursion.
