Stolberg (Rhld.) combines a medieval castle and historic old town with early modern copper yards and exhibitions on natural landscapes, mining history and forestry. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to different interests: architectural history and city walks, or insights into the landscape and traditional work.

Old Town, Castle and Copper Yards

The origins of Stolberg Castle and the town date back to the 12th century. The medieval castle is the town’s most prominent landmark. The old town’s lanes also invite you to take a leisurely stroll, with new perspectives opening up along the way and history brought vividly to life.

The early modern copper yards are characteristic of Stolberg, but they do not share a single architectural style. Their designs vary depending on when they were built. The Rose Copper Yard is one specific example: built around 1600, it now serves as an arts and crafts centre with studios used by several artists. Stolberg thus brings together different architectural styles and contemporary artistic use.

Exhibitions on Nature and Work

The information centre for the Schlangenberg Nature Reserve in Breinig presents geological, mining history and natural landscape themes relating to Schlangenberg and its calamine flora. The exhibition features different types of displays: a 3D model shows Schlangenberg and its surroundings; a diorama depicts a typical section of the landscape, with preserved natural elements from the flora and fauna set against a painted background. Group tours are available by prior arrangement.

The Zweifall Sawmill Museum focuses on timber harvesting and processing. On display are historic timber-harvesting tools, as well as equipment for measuring and marking timber. Photographs document the development of timber transport, from the use of horses to trucks. A media station offers eight short films, including ones about sawmill technology, tree felling in the past and present, forest functions and charcoal burning. Check seasonal opening hours and demonstration dates before your visit.

The Wider Region: Aachen City Region

The wider travel destination of the Aachen City Region offers further regional perspectives. Located in the tri-border area near the Netherlands and Belgium, the Aachen City Region brings together diverse natural landscapes, historic town centres and extensive cycling and hiking infrastructure.

One specific example at the regional level is the Blausteinsee Water Trail: this themed circular route is 5.2 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Dürwiß-Blausteinsee car park. The Aachen City Region also has seven carefully planned gravel bike routes ranging from 26 to over 40 kilometres, suitable for relaxed or more challenging rides. They are not signposted; navigation is by GPX tracks or the Aachen City Region’s tour app, Outdooractive or Komoot. Before planning, check the current route selection and available digital navigation options.
