Explore Venwegen on trails of varying lengths: the family trail is around four kilometres long, circular trail 07 is just under 9.6 kilometres, and the Gedankenschleife is about 13 kilometres. Each route has its own focus, from observation stations to a trail designed to encourage reflection.
Circular Trails with Different Focal Points
The signposted circular trail 07, “Rundweg Venwegen,” starts and ends at the Birkenhof car park. The route, just under 9.6 kilometres long, passes through forests, along stream valleys and field edges. Six stations explore how forests, water and ecosystems are adapting to climate change. Highlights include a panoramic view from Venwegen across the Münsterländchen and Aachen to the Three-Country Point, as well as the Vichtbach stream, a natural area with a rich history.
The signposted “Familienrunde Venwegen” (Venwegen Family Trail) also starts and ends at the Birkenhof car park. It is around four kilometres long, easy to walk, family-friendly and suitable for pushchairs. The route passes through woodland and alongside meadows. Observation and hands-on stations cover forest edges, insects, signs of fungi, calamine and the Andreashütte. Compared with the longer circular trail 07, this route focuses on a shorter distance and stations where visitors can discover and take part.
At around 13 kilometres, the “Gedankenschleife” (Thought Loop) is longer than the other two trails mentioned. It forms a loop around Venwegen and is intended to encourage reflection. The routes therefore differ in more than length: the family trail features pushchair-friendly paths and hands-on stations, circular trail 07 combines climate-related topics with landscape views, and the Gedankenschleife offers a longer route with a contemplative focus.
Landscape, Church and Trail History
At the southern edge of the village, Landscape Plan No. 4, dated 28 February 2005, designates a small orchard as a protected landscape feature. At the eastern edge, the same plan describes a protected stand of trees and shrubs on a slope. Shrubs typical of calcareous soils grow there, including blackthorn, hawthorn and hornbeam. The two edges of the village thus feature different landscape elements: the orchard in the south and the stand of trees and shrubs on the slope in the east.
St. Brigida Church is located at Vennstraße 91 in Venwegen and is described as lovingly restored and well maintained. This does not mean that it is open to the public. The village’s history is also connected to its trails: Venwegen was a stop on the route from Kornelimünster through the High Fens.
Another trail connection is the Copper Route. It passes the AndreashĂĽtte and continues to the Birkenhof forest restaurant/hotel in the Venwegen district. A rest stop is planned there before the final three kilometres of the route. Visitors wishing to try the Vital-Parcours (Vitality Trail) will find an additional starting point at the Venwegen hiking car park opposite the Birkenhof restaurant. Cars can be parked free of charge at the Venwegen-Birkenhof car park.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
The nearest bus stop to the Vital-Parcours starting point is called Vennwegen SĂĽd and is served by several bus routes. If travelling by bus, it is worth checking the current timetable. This lets you plan your journey and choose your trail separately, without assuming a particular connection.

An exhibition at the information centre for the Schlangenberg Nature Reserve in Breinig explores the Schlangenberg’s geology, mining history and natural environment, as well as its calamine flora. Exhibits include a 3D model of the Schlangenberg and its surroundings, and a diorama featuring preserved natural elements from local flora and fauna against a painted backdrop. Group tours are available by prior arrangement only.
Early modern copper courtyards are characteristic of Stolberg; their architectural styles vary according to when they were built and do not form a single uniform type. The Rose Copper Courtyard, built around 1600, now serves as an arts and crafts centre with studios used by several artists. A leisurely stroll through the lanes of Stolberg’s Old Town continually reveals new perspectives and brings history vividly to life.
