Lammersdorf’s history at the farm museum and in the church

The Lammersdorf Farm Museum was established in 1984 in a former farmhouse. Around 2,000 exhibits offer insight into agriculture and everyday life in the Monschau region; visitors are allowed to handle many of them. This means the museum combines regional cultural history with a collection that can be explored up close, not just viewed from a distance. Anyone interested in everyday life and agriculture in the region will find a tangible point of connection here.

Another historical landmark is St John the Baptist Church. Its foundation stone was laid in 1901. The church survived the fighting in the Hürtgen Forest in 1944/45 almost unscathed; historical paintings were also discovered there. This brings architectural history, wartime events and an art discovery together. The museum and the church offer different ways to explore Lammersdorf’s history.

Cycling route nearby

The Vennbahn runs near Lammersdorf, a 125-kilometre cycling path between Aachen and Troisvierges. The route follows a former railway line and passes through the High Fens, villages and cross-border landscapes in Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. It is mostly flat and paved. This offers a different focus from Lammersdorf’s cultural and historical landmarks: instead of local history, the focus here is a longer cycling route through several countries.

More options in the wider destination of Simmerath

The wider destination of Simmerath offers several hiking routes of varying lengths. The 15.1-kilometre Panorama Trail starts at the village square in Simmerath-Strauch and leads through typical Eifel farmland to the Michelshof wind farm. Along the way, it offers panoramic views of the Eifel landscape, Lake Rur and the Kermeter forest opposite. The 14.2-kilometre Rursee Heights Trail starts at the Rursee Centre in Simmerath-Rurberg. For those who take landscape views into account when choosing a route, the Panorama Trail offers the named vistas as well as its route; for the Rursee Heights Trail, its length and starting point are the specific reference points.

The “Wolfshügel” Eifel viewpoint is 360 metres above Einruhr. From there, the view extends over the village and across the Upper Lake to the Buhlert forest. The Eifelsteig and the local Püngelbach circular hiking trail (No. 75) pass directly by the viewpoint. For cycling, there is also the “Around Lake Rur” tour, which runs for 26 kilometres around the lake. Hiking and cycling can thus be distinguished by their respective routes and the destinations described.

Swimming options are also among the things to do in Simmerath. The swimming area in Woffelsbach Bay is directly in the lake and marked off with yellow buoys; bathing conditions may vary with the water level. The natural swimming pool in Einruhr uses no chlorine or chemicals. The used water is biologically cleaned in a reed pond. This gives you two different swimming options: a marked-off area in the lake and a natural swimming pool with biological water treatment.

The Rurberg National Park Gate in Simmerath features the “Lifelines of Nature” exhibition, a digital terrain model of the national park and national park films. Free guided walks into the Kermeter forests start from there; check the current schedule before planning, as dates may change. Guided tours and workshops can also be booked at the Lammersdorf Farm Museum, including a workshop on turning grain into bread. Check availability before your trip.

In Einruhr, the walking rest stop at the Heilsteinhaus offers a place to relax and picnic after a hike or bike ride. The Einruhr National Park information point is at the same location and provides information about activities in the National Park Eifel adventure region. In the wider destination of Simmerath, you can therefore find not only routes and swimming options, but also specific places to take a break or get information about activities.
