Rurberg lies directly on Lake Rur and the Rur Dam in Eifel National Park. Hiking, water sports, cycling and motorcycle tours are all part of what the village has to offer. Other attractions include the natural swimming area at the Rurseezentrum and the Rurberg National Park Gate. This gives you a range of options to plan your trip around: time by the water, tours and insights into the national park.

Swimming at Lake Rur

The Eiserbachsee natural swimming area at the Rurseezentrum Rurberg offers a freely accessible sunbathing lawn and a sandy area with shallow water. A playground, a beach volleyball court and a football pitch round out the swimming facilities. Admission is free; parking is subject to a fee, and an accessible toilet is available. Swimming is at your own risk. Seasonal lifeguard supervision is not always available.

The wider Simmerath destination has other swimming spots with different features. The swimming area in Woffelsbach Bay is directly in the lake and marked off with yellow buoys; swimming conditions may vary depending on the water level. The Einruhr natural adventure pool does not use chlorine or chemicals at all. The water used there is biologically purified in a reed bed pond.

Discover the National Park

The Rurberg National Park Gate features the exhibition “Lifelines of Nature.” The gate in Simmerath also offers a digital terrain model of the national park and National Park films. A free ranger tour leads into the forests of the Kermeter: it starts every Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Rurberg National Park Gate. As the weekly schedule may change, check the current date before your visit.

Routes and viewpoints in Simmerath

The Lake Rur Heights Trail offers views across Lake Rur. It is 14.2 kilometres long and starts at the Rurseezentrum in Simmerath-Rurberg. For cyclists, the “Around Lake Rur” route follows a 26-kilometre loop around the lake. You can choose between a named hiking trail with views of Lake Rur and a cycling loop around the lake. The Heights Trail is 11.8 kilometres shorter than the cycling loop.

Other routes in the wider Simmerath destination offer different highlights. The 15.1-kilometre Panorama Trail starts at the village square in Simmerath-Strauch and crosses typical Eifel farmland to the Michelshof wind farm. Along the way, it offers panoramic views of the Eifel landscape, Lake Rur and the Kermeter across the lake. The “Wolfshügel” Eifel Viewpoint is 360 metres above sea level, overlooking Einruhr. From there, the distant view extends over the village and across the Obersee to the Buhlert forest. The Eifelsteig and the local Püngelbach circular hiking trail (No. 75) pass directly by the viewpoint.

Another place to visit in Rurberg
