Stralsund can be experienced from two perspectives: through its medieval urban landscape and through its museums and maritime attractions. When planning, it is worth keeping the different conditions in mind: ferry services follow timetables, while harbour cruises operate seasonally.
Old Town and architectural history
Stralsund’s historic Old Town is part of the “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”, which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 27 June 2002. Its medieval layout has remained virtually unchanged to this day. This includes the street network, the arrangement of streets and squares, and the plot structure. The focus is therefore not only on the history of individual buildings, but also on the layout of the urban space.
At the level of individual buildings, the Museum House offers another perspective on the Old Town: built around 1320 as a merchant’s house, it is one of the city’s oldest buildings. On a guided tour of Stralsund, you can discover winding lanes, impressive churches and striking Brick Gothic architecture. Check the current dates in advance if you are planning to join a tour.
The Stralsund Playing Card Factory offers a different way to explore the city’s history. It is a museum, workshop and laboratory, and produces both historical and new playing cards. This brings the presentation of the cards together with their production, rather than focusing only on the finished product.
Maritime museums and their different focuses
With its exhibitions, “Sea for Children” and 50 aquariums, the OZEANEUM Stralsund offers an underwater journey through the northern seas. It also features one of the world’s largest whale exhibitions, with life-size replicas of marine mammals. These include a 26-metre-long blue whale. The rooftop terrace is home to a Humboldt penguin enclosure; from there, panoramic views extend across the silhouette of Stralsund, a UNESCO World Heritage city.
Since 1951, the MEERESMUSEUM has been housed in the former Dominican monastery of St Catherine in Stralsund’s Old Town. Its 31 aquariums include a “Caribbean Reef” with 800,000 litres of water. The choice of themes offers a clear contrast: the OZEANEUM focuses on the northern seas, while the MEERESMUSEUM features the Caribbean Reef.
Harbour, Hiddensee and the beach resort
Daily ferry services run from Stralsund harbour to all three ports on the island of Hiddensee. Check the current timetable for your travel date before setting off. Harbour cruises offer open views across the Strelasund, towards Stralsund’s Old Town and the nearby coast of Rügen. They operate seasonally, so check the current operating period before your trip.
Stralsund beach resort has 20,000 m² of fine sandy beach. It can be reached on bus route 4, getting off at the “Klinikum am Sund” stop. If you plan to take the bus, check the current route before your visit.
The timetables for Hiddensee, the seasonal operation of harbour cruises and the bus connection to the beach resort each come with their own planning considerations.
