The Grimmen Local History Museum is housed in the Mühlentor, also known as the Tribseeser Tor. It is one of three surviving city gates in the medieval town fortifications dating from 1325. This connects a tangible building with the town’s history, which the museum offers a distinctive way to explore.

Town History Between the Gate and Brick Gothic

The Local History Museum’s collection includes household items from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection of traditional crafts also includes agricultural equipment. Household items and tools therefore offer two distinct ways to explore the town’s history alongside the building itself: the gate recalls the medieval fortifications, while the collections encompass objects from domestic life and agriculture.

St. Mary’s Church in Grimmen was built from around 1275. Its oldest part is an Early Gothic hall church with five bays. Together with the town hall and the three city gates, St. Mary’s Church is one of the town’s impressive sights. If you would like to follow an architectural theme, you can explore the “Routes to Brick Gothic” in Grimmen. Five bays divide the oldest part into sections. This detail complements the classification of the building as an Early Gothic hall church with a specific description of its structure and makes its architectural features easier to picture.

Artworks also add to the impressions of architectural and town history: Grimmen has nearly 20 objects made of bronze, wood, and ceramics. The different materials offer a distinct dimension to the town experience alongside its architecture.

Views, the Animal Park, and a Cultural Program

Grimmen Water Tower serves several purposes: it houses the town information office, an exhibition space, and a registry office; with its glass-domed viewing pavilion, it is also a lookout point. From the observation platform, you can enjoy panoramic views of the historic old town and the surrounding area. Access is via 116 steps. If you plan to visit the lookout point, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Grimmen Animal Park offers a different experience, with petting enclosures for goats and piglets. The “Meeting Point Europe” cultural center hosts more than 100 concerts, shows, dance and gala events, as well as comedies and readings each year. The program may change; if you are planning your stay around a particular event, check the current schedule.

The attractions offer clear choices when deciding what to focus on: the city gates, St. Mary’s Church, the town hall, and Brick Gothic architecture represent the town’s architectural history; the Local History Museum complements them with household items and agricultural equipment. The water tower offers a viewpoint, while the animal park and cultural center add other kinds of experiences. You can plan your stay around what interests you most, whether that is architecture, collections, views, animals, or a specific event program.
