When planning a stay in Sassnitz, two very different distances can help you get your bearings: the town harbor’s outer breakwater, about 1.5 kilometers long, and the nearly 12-kilometer cliff-top trail, which starts in Lohme and follows the high shoreline to Sassnitz. Nature and cultural attractions add to this coastal perspective. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether your days will be shaped more by walks around the harbor, longer coastal trails, or nature and history.

Coast and harbor: a stroll or a longer walk

The outer breakwater is open to pedestrians, making it possible to walk to the green-and-white lighthouse. Since 1903, it has guided ships. At around 1.5 kilometers, the breakwater makes for a clearly defined stroll; the cliff-top trail is the much longer option. It offers striking views of the interplay between sea, chalk and forest, and follows the high shoreline for nearly 12 kilometers to Sassnitz. The two routes therefore differ not only in length but also in character: harbor and lighthouse on one hand, the cliff-top landscape on the other.

Depending on the season, boat trips depart from Sassnitz Town Harbor along the chalk coast, to Cape Arkona, or to the piers of the Baltic seaside resorts. Check in advance which trips are available during your travel dates. The season and current schedules matter when planning, so the cliff-top trail and boat trips are different ways to experience the coast.

Nature between forest clearing and coastal views

Sassnitz Zoo is set in a 2.5-hectare forest clearing in Jasmund National Park and offers views of the Baltic Sea. Children can enjoy a water playground and a sand playground. The KÖNIGSSTUHL National Park Center in Sassnitz has an exhibition for visitors of all ages, as well as a multimedia show. There is also a viewing platform above the Königsstuhl, with views of the coast and the Baltic Sea.

The two attractions offer different experiences: a visit to the zoo includes the forest clearing, Baltic Sea views and playgrounds, while the National Park Center focuses on its exhibition, multimedia show and viewing platform. If you’re planning a nature outing with children, the zoo’s playgrounds are a practical consideration. The center’s exhibition is intended for visitors of all ages and can be combined with views of the coast.

Old Town, church and maritime history

Alt Sassnitz is a historic old town with old houses and villas, distinctive streets and squares, and views of the Baltic Sea. St. John’s Church was completed in 1883 as a single-nave brick building in the Neo-Gothic style, with an octagonal tower attached at the side. The brickwork, floor plan and tower give the church its distinctive architectural form.

The Fishing and Harbor Museum tells the story of the development of Sassnitz’s fishing industry and town harbor, as well as Sassnitz’s growth into a fishing and seaside resort. The maritime history also includes the H.M.S. Otus, a former Oberon-class attack submarine of the British Royal Navy. These are distinct topics: the development of fishing and the harbor, and the history of a submarine of this class.

Getting around and choosing accommodation

Sassnitz has its own municipal bus route; VVR regional bus routes are also available. If you’re planning to take the bus, check the current timetables before your trip. For boat trips, the season and current schedules are important. Planning differs for buses and boats: for buses, check the timetable; for boat trips, the time of year matters too.

The nearly 12-kilometer cliff-top trail and the outer breakwater, about 1.5 kilometers long, give you a clear sense of the distance involved in each walk. If you like, add seasonal boat trips to your plans, and check the current timetables if you want to travel by bus.
