Semlow brings together architectural history spanning several centuries: the manor house at Semlow Castle was commissioned around 1825, while the fieldstone church dates back to the early 13th century. A neo-Gothic cemetery chapel, historical garden notes and the church’s interior paintings offer further perspectives on the town’s history.

Manor House and Churches from Different Eras

The manor house at Semlow Castle was commissioned around 1825 by Carl August von Behr-Negendank and built by Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, court architect to the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The approximate date and the two names mark the construction of the house as a distinct historical period. The cemetery chapel represents a different building project: it was built in 1880/81 as a neo-Gothic brick structure. Semlow’s village church, by contrast, dates from the early 13th century and is a fieldstone church. Brick and fieldstone, together with the different construction dates, offer a concrete comparison without assigning the buildings to a single construction period.

Several periods are also represented inside the village church. Its tower holds three bells: one dates from the late 14th century, and the other two from 1447 and 1611. The interior was painted throughout in 1860, in the principal work of Lübeck painter C. J. Milde. The early church building, bells and interior paintings thus span a long period of time. Visitors interested in architecture and art history will find different points of connection to the town’s history here.

A Historical Look at the Gardens

An 1850 account describes the gardens then being established in Semlow. It lists the park and game park, ponds and forecourt, as well as the rose garden, orchard, kitchen garden and nursery. The list ranges from landscaped areas to productive gardens and records a period of development. The account therefore adds another perspective to the architectural history: it draws attention to how the gardens were laid out at the time, not just to individual buildings.

Vorpommern-Rügen: A Broader Cultural and Landscape Context

Across the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Rügen, the district is estimated to have around 60 museums. The Gallery at the Monastery in Ribnitz-Damgarten focuses on fine art: it mainly displays contemporary regional art and a permanent exhibition of prints by Lyonel Feininger. The district’s art collection is also preserved, maintained and administered there. It comprises around 500 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, ceramics, silk painting and textile design, dating from the late 19th century to the present day. Check current visiting conditions before your visit.

In Putbus, the gallery in the Orangery hosts up to eight exhibitions a year; readings and concerts are also held there. The historic building is located in the heart of the art and cultural town of Putbus. Traditionally, at the end of the year, the gallery presents works from the collection of the Rügen Cultural Foundation, which comprises more than 1,500 exhibits. Check the current programme when planning a specific visit.

The broader regional context also includes the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain, as well as Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz. On Rügen, the beech forests in Jasmund National Park are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.” The old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar.” These examples represent further cultural and landscape themes within Vorpommern-Rügen; they offer a separate regional perspective alongside Semlow’s architectural and garden history.
