A wide range of themes can shape a stay in Ribnitz-Damgarten, including a large raised bog, North German architecture, a monastery exhibition and amber-related activities. To help plan your trip, it is useful to choose a focus first: Would you like to explore landscapes and ecology, admire historic buildings or take part in an activity yourself?
Moorland and nature trail
The coastal Ribnitzer Großes Moor is located in the Neuheide district and forms part of the Ribnitz-Damgarten town forest. At 274 ha, it is one of the largest raised bogs in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. At the Forest and Moor Information Centre, a nature trail along a manageable route provides information about ecology, as well as the flora and fauna of the different ecological zones in the Ribnitz town forest. The moor and the trail offer different points of focus: the moor refers to the specific natural landscape, while the trail explores ecological topics and the town forest’s different ecological zones. If you are interested in nature, you will find both a clearly defined landscape and a related way to learn about it here.
Architecture and local history
The Klockenhagen Open-Air Museum showcases 20 examples of North German architecture in a unique ensemble. The variety of examples makes architecture a focus of the museum visit in its own right. By contrast, the Rostock Gate puts a single building centre stage: it is Ribnitz-Damgarten’s only surviving Gothic town gate. Built in the 15th century, it still marks the entrance to the town centre. The town’s history therefore offers two different perspectives: an ensemble of North German architecture and a gate whose historic function remains apparent from its position in the townscape.
Ribnitz Monastery has a permanent exhibition featuring unique exhibits, including the mysterious “nun’s dust.” The exhibition thus complements the architectural focus with a collection and exhibition of its own. If you would particularly like to see this exhibit, check the latest visitor information before your visit: the displays may change.
Get hands-on and experience amber
The Klockenhagen Open-Air Museum also offers a hands-on activity: visitors can bake their own loaf as part of the “Wood-fired bread baking” activity at the museum bakery in the Hanstorf bakehouse. The activity is seasonal and costs extra; check the dates in advance if you would like to include it in your plans.
At the ErlebnisWerkstatt (Experience Workshop) of the German Amber Museum, visitors of all ages can, among other things, polish amber and search for amber in the sand. The workshop activities may vary, so it is worth checking in advance. The JOHO Park at Bernsteinsee in Ribnitz-Damgarten offers a different kind of activity: its aqua park features giant slides, climbing elements and jumping platforms. This gives you a choice between hands-on amber activities and an aqua park as different points of focus.
Plan your stay around your interests
The attractions differ not only in their themes but also in the kind of experience they offer: the nature trail teaches visitors about ecology, the open-air museum showcases examples of North German architecture, and the ErlebnisWerkstatt invites you to get hands-on. The Rostock Gate and the permanent exhibition at the monastery also offer insights into local history and exhibits. You can consider these interests separately rather than combining them into a single itinerary.
This gives your search for a hotel a clear connection to your travel interests without assuming that you need any particular accommodation or facilities.
