Anyone visiting Groß Kordshagen in autumn will find a place with a clear focus on nature: crane resting is one of the highlights at this time of year, when thousands of cranes grazing here trumpet as they trace their formations across the skies above Groß Kordshagen every day. At the same time, the visible Grabow, water activities nearby and a small technical monument help shape what the area has to offer. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the seasonal natural spectacle, the Bodden landscape and the historical points of interest separately. This will help you decide which focus should shape your stay.
Crane Resting in Autumn
In autumn, crane resting is a highlight: Thousands of cranes grazing here fly over Groß Kordshagen every day, trumpeting as they trace their spectacular formations. This natural spectacle gives a visit a distinct seasonal focus. If the cranes’ stopover is the main reason for your trip, autumn is a good time to visit.
The Grabow and Activities on the Water
The Grabow is visible from Groß Kordshagen. It is the largest of the four Bodden lagoons that have formed between the mainland and the Fischland/Darß/Zingst peninsula. This puts the view of the water in its landscape context: The Grabow is part of a Bodden lagoon area between the mainland and the peninsula.
Nearby, you can experience the Grabow from Flemendorf harbour or from a nearby bathing area. Activities include fishing, exploring the water by boat, swimming or surfing. These two points of interest and the different water activities give you several ways to shape your stay on the Bodden. You can focus either on the water itself or on the view of the landscape visible from Groß Kordshagen.
Windmill and Manor House
A small windmill stands on the Bodden dike between Groß Kordshagen and Flemendorf. It was once used to drain land on the Baltic Sea and is now a technical monument and a well-known landmark. Its former function and current role tell two different stories: The windmill is part of the area’s technical history and is also a distinctive point of reference.
Another historical point of interest is Groß Kordshagen Manor House, built between 1870 and 1880. The Olsen Café is located in the manor house. Here, architectural history and a present-day place to eat come together. If you are planning to visit the café, it is best to check the latest opening hours and visitor information in advance.
Landscape and Municipality
There are also two landscape-related points of interest at the municipal level: The municipality of Groß Kordshagen is connected to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and lies directly beside Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. The long-distance cycle route and the national park highlight different aspects of the municipality: a connection to a regional cycling route on the one hand, and its location beside a protected natural area on the other.
More Culture in Vorpommern-Rügen
Vorpommern-Rügen district provides a distinct regional setting with other nature and culture-related themes; it includes the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain. The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is part of Vorpommern-Rügen district. The district also includes the island of Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz. There are an estimated 60 or so museums in the district. The old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar,” and the beech forests in Jasmund National Park on Rügen are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.”
Another cultural highlight can be found in Ribnitz-Damgarten: The gallery at the monastery preserves, cares for and administers the Vorpommern-Rügen district art collection. It comprises around 500 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture, ceramics, silk painting and textile design, dating from the late 19th century to the present day. The gallery also has a permanent exhibition of graphics by Lyonel Feininger. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
