Lüssow and Stralsund
Lüssow is a suburban municipality on the outskirts of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. It is administered by the Niepars administrative district and is located in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The village of Lüssow lies along Federal Highway 194. Stralsund’s Old Town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002 together with Wismar.
Vorpommern-Rügen in a wider context
The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Rügen includes the island of Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz; the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is also part of the district. There are an estimated 60 museums in the district.
Historical traces
Lüssow was first mentioned in 1270. In 1302, the village was sold to the city of Stralsund and subsequently became a rural village belonging to Stralsund. These two dates mark distinct milestones: the early mention and the later historical relationship with the Hanseatic city. Evidence by Lake Pütte reaches further back. An old trade route passed by the lake around 10,000 years before our era. The island in Lake Pütte is 300 to 400 metres long and was probably a fortified Slavic settlement. These prehistoric traces and the medieval history of the village therefore belong to very different periods.
Paths and landscape
Lake Pütte is a destination for day trips in a scenic setting. A walk from Pütte to Langendorf runs right along the lake; from Langendorf, the route can continue along Lake Borgwall to Lüssow. Langendorf is a possible endpoint for the section by Lake Pütte, or a transition point for continuing to Lüssow along Lake Borgwall. Lüssow also offers views across fields and meadows and towards a wind farm. The island in Lake Pütte is used by some animal species.
Finds and architectural history
The Langendorf gold bowls date from the Bronze Age and were found in a field between Gut Langendorf and Lake Borgwall. At the STRALSUND MUSEUM, the two bowls are among the highlights of the archaeological collection and the most valuable exhibits in the prehistory and early history collection. If you are specifically looking for the gold bowls, check in advance whether they are currently on display. Another architectural feature is the Galgenberg waterworks complex. It is a protected monument, including the entrance pump house and two residential buildings.
