Mellenthin brings together the natural landscape on the northern edge of the village with a distinctive history of castles and churches. Cycling routes that pass through the village add to its appeal. When planning your trip, you can focus on the landscape, historic buildings or a cycling stage.

Hinterland and Heath

Mellenthin lies inland, about 5 km north of the Szczecin Lagoon. Mellenthin Heath is on the northern edge of the village and is part of Usedom Nature Park. Here, a specific local landscape meets the broader setting of the nature park. Across the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald travel destination, the three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district. This figure describes the region as a whole; for a local perspective, the heath is the precise natural point of reference.

Castle and Village Church

The Renaissance complex in Mellenthin was built between 1575 and 1580. Mellenthin Water Castle is open to the public; maintenance work or events may restrict access. The castle offers meals in its dining rooms and walks through a park with mature trees. If you are planning a visit or meal, check the latest information in advance, as operating details may change.

On the way to the castle is the former manor farm, a restored half-timbered building dating from the 16th century. As a half-timbered building, it represents a different architectural style from the Renaissance complex and adds to the picture of Mellenthin’s architectural history. The village church offers a much earlier point of reference: it was founded in 1319 as a branch church of Usedom’s St. Paul’s Church. Its preserved ceiling paintings depict biblical scenes and the martyrdom of Saint Erasmus. Panel paintings from the late 17th century depict the Crucifixion and the Last Judgment. The church’s founding therefore predates the Renaissance complex’s construction by more than two and a half centuries.

Cycling Routes and Getting There

A description of Regional Route 5 published in 2014 gives Schmollensee station as both the starting point and destination, and the route passes through Mellenthin. As route conditions can change, check the route before setting out on a cycling tour. The official Im Achterland cycle route leads to Mellenthin by bicycle and passes the water castle; it gives 1575 as the castle’s year of construction. For this route, too, it is advisable to check current conditions before setting off.

The two route descriptions emphasize different things: Route 5 gives Schmollensee station as the starting point and destination, while Im Achterland connects the route to the water castle. This may help you choose a cycling tour without implying that the two routes are the same. A description published in 2021 also included the UBB Achterland bus tour, which passed through Mellenthin. Check the current route and timetables before travelling.

Regional Cuisine

Landgasthaus Klein serves Pomeranian fish specialties, meat and sausage dishes, and homemade cakes based on family recipes. As the menu may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. Along with the dining options at the water castle, the inn offers another useful point of reference when planning your stay.
