Dargen is located in Usedom’s Achterland, directly on the Kleines Haff. Different themes come together in the village and its municipality: technological history, a museum focused on the GDR, art in Katschow, and information about nature and the landscape. When planning your visit, you can prioritise according to your interests: would you like to explore technology and history, discover art, or spend time in the landscape? The specific offerings differ considerably—from vehicles and engine technology to a cultural venue, a natural forest and a broad, flat landscape.

Technology History, the GDR and Art

The Kachlin wind-powered pumping station is a technical monument dating from 1920, located near Lake Kachlin. It offers a distinct historical point of interest alongside the GDR Museum in Dargen: here, the focus is on a technical structure and the year it was built, while the museum presents a broad range of vehicle and technology themes from the GDR.

The DDR-Museum Dargen / Usedom e.V. was founded in 1997 on the site of a former agricultural trading cooperative. Its focus includes GDR motorcycles, engine technology and tractors, as well as NVA technology, ambulances, cars and fire service equipment. The individual exhibits may change. The subject matter thus ranges from everyday and vehicle technology to military and fire service technology. The association also runs a restaurant serving typical GDR dishes and homemade cake. As the menu may change, it is advisable to check what is currently available before your visit.

The Kunsthof Usedom in Katschow offers a different cultural perspective. The cultural venue was created by painter and sculptor Roland Oesker. This means that different cultural themes coexist in the municipality: the collection of technological and historical objects at the GDR Museum, a technical monument near Kachlin, and the artist-created cultural venue in Katschow.

Nature and Landscapes

The Wisentpark in Dargen’s district of Prätenow covers three hectares of unmanaged natural woodland. More than 70 bird species breed in its enclosures. The walking trail provides information about Usedom’s wildlife, the development of nature and the history of the landscape. Nature observation and context go hand in hand here: the trail covers not only wildlife, but also changes to the landscape and the development of nature on Usedom.

The European bison enclosure in Prätenow on Usedom opened in summer 2004 as a breeding and exhibition enclosure run by NABU Deutschland. Visitors can observe European bison at close range; there is also a birdhouse. The enclosure also provides information about European bison and conservation work aimed at reintroducing the animals to local forests. If you are primarily interested in observing animals, this focus offers a different perspective from the walking trail at Wisentpark, which also covers the development of nature and the history of the landscape.

The Thurbruch is a broad, flat landscape characterised by drainage ditches, meadows, pastures, and rapeseed and grain fields. You can explore the area on foot or by bicycle. Another specific cycling option is the Usedom Traditions Tour, which passes through Dargen, Kachlin and Katschow. These two descriptions help with different planning decisions: the Thurbruch is a landscape that can be explored by bike or on foot, while the tour identifies a route through three villages. Check the current route before setting off.
