Those looking to combine cultural discoveries with a cycling tour in Wusterhusen will find two clear starting points: St. John's Church, with its medieval furnishings, and the Bodden Tour, which passes through the village. This makes it easy to plan a stay combining church art and regional cycling. Both highlights give the trip its own distinctive character.

Medieval art in St. John's Church

The wall paintings in St. John's Church are divided between two clearly distinct periods: those on the longitudinal walls date from the 13th century, while those on the triumphal arch are from the first quarter of the 15th century. The paintings on the triumphal arch are therefore considerably younger than those on the longitudinal walls.

The granite baptismal font also dates from the first half of the 13th century. Its distinctive detail is four male heads on the basin. The medieval carved altar adds another work to the church's furnishings: it dates from 1510 and was remodeled in the Baroque style in 1650. The two dates mark different chapters in its history—first its creation, then its transformation.

Organ, bells and events programme

The mechanical slider-chest organ was built in 1841 by Carl August Buchholz of Berlin and has been preserved almost in its original condition. After successful restoration, the Buchholz organ was rededicated in a festive service on 14 July 2024. The year it was built and its rededication thus mark different chapters in the instrument's history.

St. John's Church has three bells; the oldest probably dates from 1319. The church has also hosted seasonal events: in 2024, it was part of the “Zeit für Dich – Spiritueller Sommer im Norden” series. Check current dates if you would like to plan your trip around an event.

Explore Wusterhusen by bike

The Bodden Tour passes through Wusterhusen and runs, among other places, between Lubmin and Hanshagen. One described cycling route continues to Lubmin on a cycle path after passing through Wusterhusen; Lubmin is about 2.5 kilometres away. This approximate distance helps you plan the onward journey; check current signs and route conditions when planning the specific tour.

A described cycling route passes a playground and rest area in the village, where you can take a break. Check on site whether the facilities are currently available for your intended use. This allows you to weigh up the cultural highlight of St. John's Church against a cycling route with a possible stop in the village.

Vorpommern-Greifswald as a wider setting

The wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald broadens the view to the district as a whole. Its three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district's area. Regional cycling routes for exploring the district include the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of EuroVelo Route EV10, the Stettiner Haff circular route, and the Northern German Romanticism Route. These routes provide a broader planning framework than the section through Wusterhusen; check the relevant route and current conditions before setting out.
