Neu Boltenhagen can be explored through different aspects of the village: the cultural centre as the hub of village life, and St. Mary’s Village Church with its medieval architectural history. There is also the Bodden Tour, which leads to Neu Boltenhagen along a scenic asphalt path about 3.5 kilometres long. Culture, architecture and a described cycling route offer different ways to shape your stay.

Culture and architectural history in the village

The Neu Boltenhagen Cultural Centre is the hub of village life in the municipality of Neu Boltenhagen. St. Mary’s Village Church offers a different perspective on the village: it is one of Pomerania’s outstanding rural sacred buildings. Construction began around 1280/90 and was largely completed in the 14th and 15th centuries, with the single-nave church hall and wooden west tower.

Medieval details have also been preserved inside. These include very colourful, partly narrative wall paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries. Early Gothic window tracery and a sequence of niches can be found in the surrounding walls of the choir. There is also a medieval sacristy extension with a vault made using an extremely rare type of ribbed moulded stone. These features make the church interesting not only for its period of construction, but also for its design.

Neu Boltenhagen Manor House was built in the 18th century. This should be distinguished from the earlier history of the estate: the Wakenitz family acquired it from the Duke of Pomerania in 1625. The two dates therefore mark different milestones—the acquisition of the estate and, later, the construction of the manor house.

The Bodden Tour to Neu Boltenhagen and towards Karbow

The Bodden Tour leads to Neu Boltenhagen along a scenic asphalt path about 3.5 kilometres long. On the way into the village, it passes through the valley of the small river Ziese. The route description thus links the approach to Neu Boltenhagen with a specific stretch of landscape.

In the village, the Bodden Tour turns right towards Karbow. It first follows a paved-slab path, then an asphalt road and then continues through the forest, reaching Karbow after about 1.4 kilometres. The distances of about 3.5 and 1.4 kilometres therefore refer to different points of reference: the asphalt path to Neu Boltenhagen in one case, and the section from the village to Karbow in the other. If you plan to cycle the route, check the conditions before setting out; they may change.

More to explore in Vorpommern-Greifswald

Beyond Neu Boltenhagen, the wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers more regional themes related to culture and nature. Three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district’s area. Cycling is also represented by several regional routes: the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through the district. The Stettiner Haff Circuit and the Route of North German Romanticism are also among the cycling routes for exploring Vorpommern-Greifswald.

For a different cultural focus, the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. The Juliett U-461 is moored in Peenemünde harbour as a museum and can be explored on a tour. If you would like to plan a guided tour of Peenemünde’s historic landscape, you can book one through the Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum.
