St Christopher’s Church and Routes

St Christopher’s Church was built in the late 13th or early 14th century as a hall church with ribbed vaulting. Inside is a knotted altar carpet made in the fishing village of Freest in 1948. The church and the carpet date from several centuries apart; both details give the church architectural and crafts-related significance.

From mid-May to mid-September, the church is open on Mondays from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. and on Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Outside these hours, you can arrange an appointment through the Kröslin parish office. Check the current opening hours before your visit so you can take the seasonal visiting hours into account when planning.

The village of Kröslin is right on the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route and the Route of North German Romanticism. Kröslin Harbour and Marina

Kröslin Harbour is a popular attraction for tourists. Kröslin Marina is a five-star marina at BALTIC SEA RESORT®. Its facilities include 500 illuminated berths with finger pontoons, as well as water and electricity hookups. The marina is a clearly identified part of the harbour’s offerings, while the church and routes are other highlights of the village.

Freest: Beach, Museum and Boat Trips

Freest is situated right where the Peene flows into the Greifswalder Bodden and is a separate district within the municipality of Kröslin. The beach in the fishing village has shallow, child-friendly waters and a small playground. This information refers to the beach in Freest; it does not describe all the attractions in the municipality.

The Freest local history museum is best known for its Freest fishing carpets. These carpets are part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. Together with the altar carpet made in Freest in 1948, now in St Christopher’s Church, they show the connection to the fishing carpet tradition in two different places in the municipality.

Converted fishing boats take visitors from Freest fishing harbour into the bay and to Ruden Island. In addition, a ferry runs hourly from Freest to the island of Usedom and to Peenemünde from May to October; bicycles can be taken on board. The fishing boat trips and the ferry service have different destinations. Check the current timetable before travelling by ferry, as schedules can change.

Visitors in Freest can also buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen early in the morning or enjoy traditional and unusual fish specialities at local restaurants. Bicycle rentals are also available in the municipality of Kröslin.
