Groß Lüsewitz Castle, a swimming lake and a Tree Discovery Trail offer different ways to spend your stay: architecture, time by the water and exploring trees on your own or with a guide. When planning, it is important to note that these attractions have different visiting arrangements. You can explore the Tree Discovery Trail independently; visits to the castle are only possible as part of scheduled programmes.

Castle and bathing area

Groß Lüsewitz Castle is a castle complex in the Neo-Renaissance style, built between 1896 and 1898. Visits are only possible as part of the programmes on offer. So if you are planning to visit the castle, check before your trip whether a suitable programme is available.

Groß Lüsewitz Lake is about 400 m from the castle. There is a small bathing area by the lake, with dining options on the lake terrace and excellent bathing water quality. The bathing area is child-friendly and suitable for families. The castle’s holiday apartments also offer bicycle rentals, allowing you to explore the surrounding area.

The Tree Discovery Trail: on your own or with a guide

You can explore the Tree Discovery Trail on your own. Overview maps and pocket-sized descriptions of the trees help you learn about them. During a public guided tour, guides explain marked trees and botanical rarities. You can therefore choose between two ways to explore: discover the trail yourself using the information provided, or join a guided tour focusing on selected trees and their distinctive features.

Cultural events and village history

The Lake and Park Festival held its 26th edition in 2025. The opening included a vernissage at Groß Lüsewitz Castle and a concert featuring singing and guitar. The festival programme also included face painting for children, craft stations, a bouncy castle, a giant water slide and pony rides. If you are travelling in another year, check the announced dates and the programme for that year.

The History Group of the Groß Lüsewitz Cultural History Association (Kulturhistorischer Verein Groß Lüsewitz e.V.) will meet publicly every other month again in 2026. Anyone interested in the village’s history can find out more or exchange ideas there. Check the specific meeting dates in advance if you would like to include one in your stay.

A clearly scheduled example of a public visit took place in 2025 at the Groß Lüsewitz Research Campus: during the Open Day, greenhouses, laboratories and experimental plots were open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Getting here and getting around without a car

Groß Lüsewitz railway station provides a transport connection for travellers. The regional train runs hourly towards Wismar via Rostock and in the opposite direction to Tessin. This makes it possible to explore the surrounding area without a car. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable and plan your day around a suitable connection.

Historical and cultural context in Sanitz

In the wider destination of Sanitz, Sanitz village church offers further historical and cultural interest: built in the 13th century, it is a sturdy fieldstone building with a half-timbered tower and contains an altar with paintings by Rudolph Suhrlandt from around 1800. The Old Forge in Sanitz is another historic landmark. It was first mentioned in a document in 1798 and is a late-Baroque oak half-timbered building.
