Zickhusen Church was built between 1824 and 1827 and was not consecrated until 10 October 1830. Its architectural form and furnishings, together with the history of the estate, give the village a distinct cultural and historical character. Access to a cycle path adds another aspect to consider when planning a visit.

Church: Building History and Design

The church was commissioned by the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg. Construction in 1824–1827 was followed by its consecration on 10 October 1830, so the building and its consecration mark separate milestones. The church is a hall church with a semicircular chancel; its tower has a bell and a gilded cross. It is one of the few Neoclassical religious buildings of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany. Both the building’s design and the history of its construction and consecration are therefore important to understanding it.

Furnishings and Art

Inside is a painted coffered ceiling. Much of the furnishing dates from the time the church was built. The organ was made by Marcus Runge in 1910; the altarpiece is by Suhrland, a court painter from Ludwigslust. These details offer distinct points of reference: most of the furnishings date from the original construction period, the organ has a specific year of manufacture, and the altarpiece is notable for its artistic attribution.

Chapel and Estate History

The church replaced a 16th-century chapel that stood beside the village pond. The village’s religious history therefore goes back further than the present building. The estate’s history also reaches back to an earlier period: in the 15th century, it belonged to the noble family of the same name and was later sold to the House of Mecklenburg. The former chief forestry estate and the Zickhusen manor estate form an architectural ensemble that has remained almost unchanged. Compared with the church’s building history, the estate’s history opens up an earlier timeframe, while the ensemble makes its own architectural statement.

Cycling and Getting Around

The cycle-path connection in Zickhusen is considered an important junction for cycling tours. As part of the cycle-path works, the parking area opposite the Schwarzer See was also expanded. This brings together a reference point for planning tours and a specific infrastructure improvement related to cycling.

Church Services and Cultural Events

The church continues to serve the congregation for worship. A tradition of musical and other cultural events is intended to continue. If you would like to include an event like this in your trip, check the specific event details in advance.

Northwest Mecklenburg in a Broader Context

In the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape lies to the north, while the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” lies to the south. The district’s landscape is shaped by terminal moraines, gently rolling ground-moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastal stretches, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. These regional landscape names place Northwest Mecklenburg in a broader context and show how varied the district’s landscapes are.
