Alt Meteln offers a clear focal point for local history: the village church in the old cemetery, complemented by the churchyard wall, bell tower, and memorial. The village also features gently rolling hills near Schwerin and activities from local clubs and cultural life. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can decide whether to focus on architectural history, the landscape, or meeting people in the village. These themes lead from the church ensemble to the distinctive features of the village and its surroundings.

Village Church and Churchyard

The village church in Alt Meteln was built in the second half of the 13th century and is by far the oldest building in the village. The Gothic brick building stands in the southern part of the area enclosed by Ringstraße, within the old cemetery. Its location is thus closely connected to the churchyard and Ringstraße.

The village’s appearance also includes the partly well-preserved churchyard wall and the bell tower outside the church. Both significantly shape the view of the village. The bell tower stands as a separate feature beside the brick building; the wall partially encloses the churchyard. Together, these structures make the area around the church a distinctive part of the old village center.

The church’s interior furnishings include wooden pews, a pulpit and gallery, as well as an altar wall in the Neo-Gothic style. The exterior is described as Gothic, while the altar wall is designed in the Neo-Gothic style. The church thus brings together different architectural features. If you would like to see the interior, check in advance whether access is possible.

Memorial by the Bell Tower

On the west side of the village church, in the churchyard in front of the wooden bell tower, stands a small memorial. It commemorates soldiers who fell in the First World War; an additional plaque is dedicated to those who fell in the Second World War. The memorial thus brings remembrance of both wars together in one place.

The memorial is accessible from Ringstraße via a broad, four-step stone staircase. Check current access arrangements before visiting. The staircase also serves as a clear landmark when you want to visit the churchyard.

Village Center and Landscape

In the 1990s and 2000s, Alt Meteln renovated its old village center, preserving much of its rural character. The church and its surrounding churchyard thus stand alongside a later phase of renewal in the village center. Anyone interested in the development of a village will find both older architectural history and traces of the renovation of the village center in the 1990s and 2000s.

Alt Meteln lies amid gently rolling hills near Schwerin; a wide-open sky is a defining feature of the village’s description. This is a different emphasis from the architectural details around the churchyard: here the focus is on the landscape, while there it is on buildings and places of remembrance in the village. Together, they offer two distinct perspectives to help you choose the focus of your stay.

Club Life, Culture, and Practical Information

The Alt Meteln local history society holds a games evening at the local history room on the first Wednesday of every month. If you would like to take part, check the participation requirements in advance. The monthly event offers a glimpse of local club life, but does not mean that the venue is generally open to visitors.

The Alt Meteln library is located at Ringstraße 2, in the community center. Its listed opening hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. Check the hours before your visit.

The 2026 KunstOffen guide listed Ursula Bahr’s painting and graphics studio in Alt Meteln. The description mentions works on paper and canvas in various techniques; some techniques are explained at the printing press. The listing refers to KunstOffen 2026. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Northwest Mecklenburg in Its Regional Context

Within the broader travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay lie to the north, and the West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin lies to the south. The district’s landscape also includes terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat stretches of coast, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This regional perspective extends the focus beyond Alt Meteln without equating the village’s distinctive features with those of the district as a whole.
