Cramonshagen takes its distinctive landscape character from Lake Cramon and the Stepenitz Glacial Valley. Old trees, numerous trails and the bathing area invite you to spend time outdoors; the village church and St John’s Festival add architectural and festive history from Cramon to your trip. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between the two: the landscape and bathing features belong to Cramonshagen, while the cultural topics mentioned are associated with the village of Cramon.

Lake, valley and old trees

Cramonshagen lies by the Stepenitz Glacial Valley and Lake Cramon. The Stepenitz flows through the lake, which is also within the Stepenitz Valley Landscape Protection Area. Old oaks, beeches and willows grow around Cramonshagen. Lake Cramon is therefore only one part of the landscape; the valley and the old trees are also part of the area’s character. When choosing a destination based on its landscape, you can take in the water, valley and trees alike.

Swimming at Lake Cramon

The bathing area in Cramonshagen has a well-maintained sunbathing lawn and a jetty. Lake Cramon is presented locally as a summer alternative to the Baltic Sea beach. For practical planning, bear in mind that swimming conditions and facilities may change seasonally. So check the current conditions before planning a swim.

Hiking trails and cycling route

There are numerous hiking trails around Cramonshagen. They offer an independent option for days when you want to focus on walking. Regional Cycling Route 8 leads to Cramonshagen, where it points out a bathing spot and a cyclist-friendly inn. Route conditions and the inn’s availability may change. If you are planning to use the route, check these details in advance.

The village of Cramon and its church

The village of Cramon was first mentioned in a document in 1178 and is described as one of the oldest villages east of the Elbe. The building history of Cramon Village Church includes several dated stages. The present church building is dated to 1414 based on the wood used in its construction. The bell tower, which stands almost entirely apart from the church, was built in 1844 separately from the nave to preserve the medieval tracery of the west gable.

The village church also preserves the granite bowl of a baptismal font from the 13th century, as well as a gravestone dated to 1400. The Friese organ dates from 1879 and was restored in 1966; its original case has not survived. The dated structural elements and furnishings make the church a distinct cultural and historical highlight alongside the landscape around Cramonshagen.

St John’s Festival in Cramon

Cramon’s annual St John’s Festival uses the barn, bakehouse, rectory garden and church as venues. The programme includes an art exhibition in the barn and fresh bread from the bakehouse. In this way, the festival combines a cultural event with something from the bakehouse. The dates and programme vary. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the relevant dates and programme items before travelling.
