The Stepenitz flows through Mühlen Eichsen; its church, manor house, park and watermill offer tangible ways to explore the local history and landscape during your stay. There is also a milestone at the entrance to the village and a cremation burial ground to its south. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these themes can help you decide whether architectural history, river scenery or archaeology best suits your travel plans.

Stepenitz and bathing area

At several points in Mühlen Eichsen, the Stepenitz has been dammed to form lakes; there is also a bathing area. The water is therefore part of both the landscape and the range of possible leisure activities. If you are planning a day of swimming, check the current conditions in advance.

Church, manor house and milestone

The village church of Mühlen Eichsen is a simple brick Gothic Evangelical Lutheran church dating from the 14th century. It stands on a steep hill above the Stepenitz and the former watermill. Its massive, square, Late Gothic west tower has a hipped roof. The construction period, brickwork and shape of the tower give the church a distinctive architectural character; its location also connects it to the river and the mill.

Opposite the church stands the Mühlen Eichsen manor house, usually called the “castle” locally. An old park surrounds the manor house and forms part of the property. The manor house at Am Park 6 and its associated park are listed in the heritage register of the Nordwestmecklenburg district; the register is dated February 28, 2025. The two facing buildings and the park can thus be understood as related landmarks in the village.

At the entrance to Mühlen Eichsen in the direction of Gadebusch, a milestone stands at Gadebuscher Straße 15, on the northwest side of the road. It is a full-mile obelisk. Its precise location, as well as the distinction between the road, the side of the road and the direction, makes it an easily identifiable point in the village landscape.

Watermill and cremation burial ground

The watermill at Gadebuscher Straße 1 is listed in the heritage register of the Nordwestmecklenburg district. The former watermill is now used solely as a residence; its milling equipment has not been preserved. It is therefore not an operating mill with its equipment intact, but can be regarded as a historic building.

South of Mühlen Eichsen is a cremation burial ground with around 5,000 burials dating from approximately 600 BC to 100 AD. It is one of the most important burial grounds in the core area of the Jastorf culture. This extends the historical perspective beyond the buildings in the village to an archaeological site in the surrounding area.

Orientation at the municipal level

For a broader sense of direction, Federal Highway 208 can be considered at the municipal level: it crosses the municipality of Mühlen Eichsen and runs from Ratzeburg via Gadebusch to Wismar. This road information refers to the municipality; when choosing a location, the specific points in Mühlen Eichsen are also useful, such as the church, manor house and bathing area.
