Moorland and historic village scenes give Krembz two clear starting points for planning a trip. Part of the municipality lies within the Schaalsee Nature Park; forests characterize the rest of the municipal area. Krembz is near Lake Schaalsee in a hilly part of Northwest Mecklenburg. Several districts are described as part of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. Local nature and culture range from moors to buildings and preserved village structures.
Moors and Landscape in Krembz
Neuendorfer Moor lies one kilometer east of Krembz. The northern part of Schönwolder Moor belongs to the municipality. Schönwolder Moor is considered Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s only raised bog with an almost undisturbed peat profile. This distinctive feature also comes with a clear limit on visiting: the moor cannot be entered because there are no paths. Before activities in protected areas, also check the relevant boundaries.
The two references to moors have different significance for orientation: Neuendorfer Moor can be located by its position east of Krembz; for Schönwolder Moor, both the northern part belonging to the municipality and the lack of paths should be noted. This distinguishes the landscape’s unique features from the possibility of visiting the site. The forests in the wider municipal area are also part of Krembz’s natural landscape.
Manor Houses, Churches and Village History
Groß Salitz Manor House was built in the second half of the 17th century and is among Mecklenburg’s oldest manor houses. The church in Groß Salitz dates from the early 13th century and houses a number of art treasures. The two buildings thus lead to different periods in the village’s history. Groß Salitz has also largely preserved its historic village structure. Stöllnitz has several well-preserved farmhouses, so the architectural history is not reflected in a single manor house alone.
Schönwolde Hunting Lodge is considered a restored attraction in private ownership in the Krembz area. Concerts and events are held there occasionally. Cultural events have also been held at Groß Salitz Manor House since 2021, including concerts, readings and children’s concerts. The venues therefore offer different historical connections for those interested in culture. As programs may change, check the specific dates in advance.
Cycling and a Stop in GroĂź Salitz
Cycling Tour 7 – North Shore of Lake Schaalsee starts at Gadebusch railway station and is about 43 kilometers long. The churches in Groß Salitz are among the attractions listed on the tour. The tour therefore offers a specific connection to local history, alongside its clearly stated starting point and approximate length.
The FahrradKulTourKirche GroĂź Salitz project invites cyclists, hikers and pilgrimage groups to stop in GroĂź Salitz. The cycling tour specifies a starting point and an approximate total distance; the project extends its invitation to various groups who would like to stop there. If you are planning your stop around current local offerings, check them in advance.
Northwest Mecklenburg in a Broader Context
Within the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hill Country with Wismar Bay” landscape lies to the north and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” to the south. Northwest Mecklenburg’s landscape is also shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, sections of steep and flat coastline, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This regional context adds to the picture of Krembz without equating the county’s landscape features with individual places.
