Werder’s village church and the “Zur Linde” restaurant offer two different points of interest: one religious and one culinary. Further historic sites are located in other parts of the municipality. So when planning a trip, pay attention to the place names: Wodarg and Kölln are separate points of interest within the municipality.
In Werder: Village Church and Traditional Home Cooking
Werder village church is worth a detour. Services are held there at varying times. If you would like to visit the church outside a service, check locally in advance whether it is open to visitors.
Residents and visitors can enjoy traditional home cooking at the “Zur Linde” restaurant. As the food on offer may change, check before your trip whether the restaurant currently serves traditional home cooking.
Churches and Village Character in the Municipality
The churches in Werder, Kölln and Wodarg are built of fieldstone and brick. In Kölln, a cobblestone street also contributes to the village’s idyllic, rural character. This helps distinguish the locations: the churches are spread across three parts of the municipality, while the street contributes to Kölln’s village character.
Historic Traces in Wodarg
There are impressive megalithic tombs in the Wodarg forest. Near Wodarg, on a bend in the Tollense, lie the remains of the medieval Burg Conerow castle complex. The castle was mentioned in a document in 1248.
Wodarg manor house also tells the story of this part of the municipality: Sigmund von Walsleben had it built around 1733. A stable granary and a large barn survive from the estate complex. An English landscape garden was laid out at the manor house in the 19th century. It is still there, but neglected.
The dates refer to different periods: 1248 for the documentary mention of Burg Conerow, around 1733 for the construction of the manor house, and the 19th century for the garden’s creation. Another sight is the ruins of Landskron Castle, about 2.4 km west of Wodarg.
A Larger Natural Area: Mecklenburg Lake District
As a wider travel destination, the Mecklenburg Lake District offers a distinct focus on nature. Müritz National Park is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District and is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and expansive meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail explores the landscape and its special features over nine stages: it follows lakeshores, passes through ancient forests, goes by inland dunes and reaches the source of the Havel.
Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours through Müritz National Park. These include guided tours in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. These nature and landscape experiences differ from the churches, manor houses and archaeological traces in the municipality.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Werder, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: would you like to concentrate mainly on Werder itself, or also include the historic sites in Wodarg and Kölln? The place names distinguish between Werder itself, other parts of the municipality and the wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District.
