Wolde brings together two historical perspectives: a manor house that has served different purposes and the remains of a medieval castle. A landscaped park with a chestnut avenue leads directly to the manor house. The Mecklenburg Lake District also offers its own regional perspective on nature and culture.
Manor House and Landscaped Park in Wolde
The manor house was originally built as an inspector’s residence and is now used as a community centre. Its former purpose and its present-day community function come together here. The village landscape also includes a landscaped park with a chestnut avenue leading directly to the manor house. You can therefore view this local landmark from two perspectives: through the history of the building and along the landscaped route leading to it.
Traces of the Castle on Castle Hill
Wolde Castle Hill consists of the remains of a medieval castle dating from the 14th century. The moat and rampart are still clearly visible. Here, visible traces of a fortification stand alongside the continued municipal use of a building—two different connections to the history of the place. The visibility of the moat and rampart may change, so bear this in mind when planning your visit.
Further Perspectives in the Mecklenburg Lake District
The Mecklenburg Lake District provides a broader regional setting for exploring nature and culture. Müritz National Park is part of this region and is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and expansive meadows. The Müritz National Park hiking trail covers the park’s landscape types and distinctive features in nine stages. It runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. The stages therefore pass through a variety of landscapes; the trail offers a different way to explore the area than visiting a single destination.
Guided tours also offer a distinct way to experience Müritz National Park. Certified nature and landscape guides lead educational tours, including visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest at Serrahn and tours from the water. You can choose between a trail through different landscape types and a guided exploration.
The Damerower Werder bison reserve offers another focus. It is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, in the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park. Visitors can observe bison there. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition featuring tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone. Wildlife watching and the trail’s different activity features complement each other as two nature-focused experiences.
For those travelling by water, Neustrelitz town harbour offers another perspective: via the Upper Havel Waterway, they can explore Müritz National Park and the Strelitz Small Lakes. The region’s highlights range from multi-stage hikes and guided tours to wildlife watching and exploring from the water.
