A Gothic ashlar church built of fieldstone, with a large half-timbered tower dating from 1750, defines the church of Groß Nemerow. Its history probably dates back to the early 14th century: it was presumably built by the Order of St. John. Inside is an ornamented baptismal font from the 13th century—an older furnishing than the tower and the church itself.
Church, local history room and school museum
Other buildings also tell the story of the area. A local history room is housed in a former fire-engine shed built around 1800. The old school houses a school museum. These places complement the perspective offered by the church with two other themes: local history and the history of education.
Historic sites in the municipality
More places to explore can be found in the villages of the Groß Nemerow municipality. Klein Nemerow is home to the impressive ruins of a fieldstone barn dating from the 14th century, which belonged to the former commandery of the Order of St. John. The former commandery site also includes the gravestone of the last commander, dating from 1620. Also in Klein Nemerow is Höhentipsberg: this significant burial mound dates from the Bronze Age, is dated to the period from 1800 to 800 BC, and is considered an archaeological monument.
Another testament to the history of the landscape is the erratic boulder field in Klein Nemerow. It comprises 20 numbered boulders placed at 17 locations. The individual numbers describe both the rocks and their distribution across several sites.
Zachow has a half-timbered church dating from the 17th century with Late Gothic carved altarpiece shrines. The annual Zachow Summer of Culture features changing exhibitions, readings and concerts. You can check the event dates before visiting. Zachow is also home to a reconstructed village smithy. It provides a venue for celebrations, book readings, literary evenings, skat tournaments and talks.
Cycling route and nature trail
There are different types of trails for an active stay. Cycle Route 2, which is 23 kilometres long, runs from Burg Stargard via the Kulturpark on Lake Tollensesee to Klein Nemerow and back via Groß Nemerow and Rowa. The nature trail from Nonnenhof to Klein Nemerow is about four kilometres long. It first follows a steep lakeshore through natural woodland and then continues along a cycle and walking path. The route and its described sections provide a practical basis for choosing between a longer cycle tour and a shorter nature walk.
Horses are also part of what Zachow has to offer: there is an Icelandic horse breeding farm, where an international Icelandic horse pace championship is held annually. The Tollense Groß Nemerow e.V. riding club organizes annual tournaments at the riding and tournament grounds in Zachow Forest. Check the latest dates for both events.
Lake Tollensesee and boat trips
At the municipal level, Groß Nemerow borders Lake Tollensesee directly. Cycle paths run along the Lake Tollensesee circular route, and there are also various places to swim. Klein Nemerow has a landing stage for passenger and scheduled boat services on Lake Tollensesee. If you are planning a trip, check the current timetable.
