At Lake Torgelower See, nature and culture come together: the area is protected as a landscape conservation area, while Torgelow Castle, the Heistersteine and the Historic Bake Oven offer different points of historical interest. A cycling route also leads to the castle. In Torgelow am See, you can explore waterbird life, local history and a specific cycling connection as distinct themes.
Lake, Island and Landscape Park
The area around Lake Torgelower See is a landscape conservation area, particularly to protect waterbirds. An island around 150 to 200 years old lies in the northern part of the lake. Cormorants have settled there since 1972; the island is also a breeding ground for mallards, gadwalls and other duck species. These dates refer to different things: the age range describes the island, while 1972 marks the start of the cormorants’ settlement. Torgelow Castle has an extensive landscape park. Its design incorporated the surrounding landscape; it is home mainly to protected waterbirds.
Local History Across Several Time Scales
Torgelow Castle was built to plans by Otto March and inaugurated in 1904. The Heistersteine take us much further back in time: this megalithic tomb lies in the Seeblänken woodland near Torgelow am See and was built between 3000 and 1800 BCE. It served as a communal burial site for a kinship group. These sites offer different historical perspectives: the castle is notable for the plans of a named architect and its inauguration year, while the Heistersteine stand out for their early date and communal burial function.
The Historic Bake Oven is on Backofenstraße and was built at a historic site. Its construction used material salvaged from the demolition of the former brickworks, which is around 200 years old. The age refers to the building material. Bread is baked in the oven during village festivals. In this way, the history of the material is linked with a local festival tradition.
Cycling Route and Getting Around
A cycling loop through the Mecklenburg Lake District passes through Carlsruh to Torgelow am See and, within the village, reaches the castle on the western shore of Lake Torgelower See. Cyclists are allowed to ride through the grounds of Torgelow Castle. As conditions may change, check before setting out whether this route through the grounds is still permitted. Outside the castle grounds, a small, secluded bathing spot lies on the shore; check local access conditions before visiting. The nearest railway station for Torgelow Castle is Waren an der Müritz.
The Mecklenburg Lake District on a Larger Scale
Müritz National Park is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District and is characterised by forests, bogs, lakes and wide meadows. Its hiking trail explores the landscape over nine stages: it runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the River Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer educational tours through Müritz National Park, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water.
