Moltzow can be explored through two very different themes: churches with clearly datable construction phases, and the Rambow petting farm with traditional domestic animal breeds and a botanical garden. There are also traces of the landscape and architectural history, as well as an unusual museum collection. For your visit, this means culture enthusiasts can compare architectural styles and historical details, while those who prefer animals and plants will find a different focus at the petting farm.

Village Churches with Different Historical Traces

The ruined church of Domherrenhagen is the last surviving structural remnant of a village that existed there from the 13th to the 15th century. The site’s history dates back to the Middle Ages: in 1271, the church in Domherrenhagen became the parish church for the inhabitants of Rambow. Services and concerts are occasionally held in the ruins; if you are interested, check for specific dates.

Rambow village church is a Renaissance fieldstone building dating from the 15th century. The altar and pulpit date from 1610; on the west gallery is an organ built in 1933 by the Danish organ builder Marcussen (Appenrade).

Schwinkendorf village church offers an earlier historical reference point: it was built in the mid-13th century. Its cemetery is surrounded by a dry-stone fieldstone wall, and the church building is a listed monument.

Each church location has a different emphasis: Domherrenhagen is defined by the village’s last surviving structural remnant, Rambow by its several construction and furnishing dates, and Schwinkendorf by the church building and its walled cemetery.

Other Historic Sites and Collections

The landscape park at the manor house in Moltzow was laid out by Wilhelm von Maltzan. Remains of a motte can still be seen behind Moltzow’s sports ground. Marxhagen is part of the municipality of Moltzow; there is a castle there built in the Tudor style in the mid-19th century. It continues the tradition of English Tudor Gothic architecture in Mecklenburg.

The First German Meter Museum is located in the Pfundgrube manor house in Rambow Hof. There is also a collection of butter wrappers. This unusual combination adds a distinct collecting focus to the history of the churches and architecture.

Rambow Petting Farm and Botanical Garden

The Rambow petting farm is home to around 200 animals representing 70 species, with a focus on traditional domestic animal breeds that are threatened with extinction. Children can enjoy a trampoline, climbing equipment and swings. The petting farm is located in Rambow Hof, in the Mecklenburg Switzerland region, on a terminal moraine; there is a car park in front of the farm. The petting farm’s botanical garden features 700 different perennials and woody plants. Animals and plants offer two distinct aspects to explore here.
