When choosing a destination, Borrentin is known above all for its architectural and ecclesiastical history: Wolkwitz Manor House combines Neoclassical architecture with Late Baroque details, while the village churches and their furnishings reveal traces of different periods. Lake Kummerow lies west of Borrentin, and Federal Highway 194 runs through the municipality. This brings together a clear local focus on culture and two geographical reference points in the description of the area.

Wolkwitz Manor House: Architecture and Park

Wolkwitz Manor House is a two-storey rendered building in the Neoclassical style. Its present form dates from the early 19th century. After standing vacant for a long time, the house was carefully restored. As a result, much of the original structure and Late Baroque forms—particularly on the main façade—as well as interior details were preserved or faithfully recreated.

The building’s history thus brings together different design elements: the Neoclassical form of the house and Late Baroque details that were preserved or recreated during the restoration. Behind the manor house is an overgrown park with a chestnut avenue. The manor house itself is among the municipality of Borrentin’s selected architectural attractions. Together, the building and park add a distinctive architectural and landscape dimension to the local cultural theme.

Village Churches and Historic Furnishings

The churches also offer specific points of interest for a trip focused on architectural styles and history. Schwichtenberg Village Church was probably built before the Reformation. It is made of fieldstones and has a wooden tower with a bell. The bell was cast in 1570 by Johannes de Borch. The church’s furnishings also include a mechanical slider-chest organ: it was built in 1865 as Opus 61 by Barnim Grüneberg Organ Builders of Stettin and restored by Rainer Wolter in 1998.

The churches are located in different parts of the municipality. Borrentin’s selected architectural attractions include Gnevezow Church, Moltzahn Village Church and Wolkwitz Village Church; Wolkwitz Manor House is also on the list. Schwichtenberg Church adds another point of interest, with its fieldstone construction, wooden tower and historic furnishings. Visitors who want to explore architectural history beyond a single building will find several different local themes here.

Nature and Excursions in the Wider Destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District

Beyond Borrentin, the wider destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District offers other distinct themes for planning a trip. Müritz National Park is characterized by forests, marshes, lakes and extensive meadows. The Müritz National Park hiking trail covers the park’s landscapes and features over nine stages: it follows the shores of lakes, passes through ancient forests and by inland dunes, and leads to the source of the River Havel. The stages offer a different scale of hiking experience from a stay focused on Borrentin’s manor house and village churches.

In Müritz National Park, certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours. These include guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. Visitors can watch the animals at the Damerower Werder bison reserve. The reserve is on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin in the Mecklenburg Lake District and within Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. There is also a forest discovery trail with climbing features, an ant house, an exhibition with touch and viewing panels, and a dendrophone. This highlights the distinction between Borrentin’s local architectural and ecclesiastical history and the separate nature themes of the wider destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District.
