Hohenmocker has a clear historical focus: its early Gothic church and Pastor’s Widow’s House tell of different building periods and ways of life. Within the municipality, manor houses, parkland and a railway station provide further points of orientation.

Church with a Medieval Building History

The church in Hohenmocker is an early Gothic ashlar building made of fieldstone. It was built on a hill around 1235 and was first mentioned in a document in 1239. The construction date and the first written mention are different historical dates and together provide a time frame for the building.

The foundations and wall remains of a former transept tower can be seen on the west side. The tower served as a place of refuge for the population. Its massive foundations at the lower level were 3.20 metres thick; such a broad construction is considered rare in the area. The church therefore draws attention not only to its architectural form but also to remnants of its former protective function.

The Pastor’s Widow’s House and Earlier Ways of Life

Built around 1800, Hohenmocker’s Pastor’s Widow’s House is a half-timbered building with two residential units and associated stables under one roof. It illustrates the former living conditions and way of life of the occupants of the parsonage, including servants and pastors’ widows. Unlike the medieval church, the house draws attention to domestic life and everyday routines. Together, the two buildings show different aspects of local history without representing the same period or function.

Manor Houses and Park History in the Municipality

Historical architectural and landscape features can also be found beyond the village of Hohenmocker, within the municipality. Hohenbrünzow Manor House was built around 1865 in the Late Classicist style; work on the English landscape park began at the same time. Until some of its stables were demolished, the estate complex—with its manor house, park and farm buildings—was considered largely intact. The manor house is privately owned and has been undergoing restoration since 2018. If you are considering a visit, check access arrangements in advance.

In Tentzerow, the manor house consists of two building sections and is a remodelling dating from the early 19th century. The former estate park contains an early German motte dating from the 14th or 15th century, overgrown with majestic English oaks. A Virginia juniper also stands in the former park, directly west behind the manor house. These details relate to Tentzerow, not to the village of Hohenmocker itself.

Landscape and Travel Directions

The Strehlower Bach flows through the area around Hohenmocker; farther downstream, it joins the Augraben near Leistenow Mill. This adds a landscape dimension to the area’s architectural history. Sternfeld railway station is located at Bahnhof 34, 17111 Hohenmocker. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current connections and timetable in advance.

More Destinations in the Mecklenburg Lake District

For broader travel planning, you could also consider destinations in the Mecklenburg Lake District. Müritz National Park is characterised by forests, bogs, lakes and expansive meadows. Its hiking trail explores this landscape in nine stages, passing lakes, travelling through ancient forests, going by inland dunes and reaching the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest at Serrahn and tours from the water.

The Damerower Werder Bison Reserve offers a different nature experience, where visitors can observe European bison. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition featuring tactile and visual displays, and a dendrophone. These destinations are part of the Mecklenburg Lake District, not local attractions in Hohenmocker. If you would like to include them in your stay, plan them as separate destinations.

Hohenmocker’s focus is therefore on architectural history and earlier ways of life; the nature and hiking activities mentioned broaden the range of options across the Mecklenburg Lake District. Choose your holiday apartment based on which of these themes is most important for your stay.
