Brake (Unterweser) offers a range of attractions: the harbor on the Weser, Harriersand as an island in the river, and distinctive reminders of the town’s history and maritime heritage. When planning your trip, you can choose between natural scenery, cycling routes and historic sites. The aspect that interests you most will determine the focus of your stay.

Harbor Views and Routes Through Brake

The long-distance cycling routes Deutsche Sielroute and Weser-Radweg run right through Brake (Unterweser). The Braker Seehafen quay facilities begin north of the town center and extend about two kilometers downstream along the Weser. They include large grain silos, cranes, warehouses and open storage areas. The Stadtkaje waterfront promenade is a pleasant place to linger. From there, you can look out over the harbor facilities, passing ships and Harriersand on the opposite bank of the Weser.

The harbor facilities and promenade offer different perspectives on the water: here, the quay and passing ships shape the scene; there, the view stretches across the Weser to the island. Brake is also a place for cyclists, with two named long-distance cycling routes running right through the town. The Deutsche Sielroute can also be considered in its wider regional context; the Weser-Radweg is the second route that passes through the town center.

Harriersand: Island and Local Recreation Area

Harriersand is an approximately eleven-kilometer-long island in the Weser and Brake’s local recreation area. Its sandy beach and abundant trees invite you to walk, cycle and linger. The island offers a different focus from the harbor views at the Stadtkaje: here, the beach, trees and opportunities to spend time outdoors take center stage.

The “Guntsiet” passenger ferry runs from the ferry landing at Brake’s Stadtkaje to Harriersand. If you plan to cross, check the operator’s latest sailing information in advance. The waterfront promenade offers views of the same island that you can reach by ferry; it is about eleven kilometers long.

Town History and Maritime Collections

The Fischerhaus is the oldest surviving house in Brake. Addick and Elisabeth Addicks built it in 1731; original wooden beams and hand-painted wall tiles have been preserved inside. Another historic site is St. Bartholomew’s Church in Golzwarden: built in 1263, it is the oldest church in Brake. You can explore the church on a guided tour; check the dates with the tourist information office.

The Unterweser Maritime Museum presents the 200-year history of Brake’s harbor. Part of the Maritime Museum of the Oldenburg Unterweser is housed in Brake’s Telegraph building. The telegraph tower displays ship models, ship portraits and nautical instruments, among other items. Together, these places trace the history of the harbor and showcase individual reminders of maritime life.

The Arp Schnitger Center is dedicated to the life and work of the organ builder, who was born in Schmalenfleth. Four display panels and audio and video presentations explain his significance. Visits and guided tours are available on request. Expert guided tours about the town’s maritime past are also held regularly. Town tours and night watchman tours can also be booked for groups on other dates by arrangement; with prior agreement, they can be conducted in Low German. Confirm dates and bookings with the tourist information office.

Brake and the Wider Wesermarsch Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Wesermarsch offers another regional perspective: it is characterized by 60 kilometers of Wadden Sea coastline and 90 kilometers of riverbanks along the Weser and Hunte. Wesermarsch is also known for its marsh landscapes, which are ideal for cycling and hiking. The Deutsche Sielroute passes right through Brake and is also a circular cycling route through Wesermarsch. Along the way, it showcases marshland and moor, sluices, harbors and towns on the Weser and North Sea coast. Its flat route is particularly suitable for cycling trips with children or on an e-bike.
