Elsfleth combines maritime urban history with excursions along the Weser and Hunte rivers: In the town center, twelve audio stations tell the story of the town and its historical figures, while cycling routes invite you to explore a range of circular tours. To plan your visit, you can choose between a town walk, a bike tour, and a visit to Elsflether Sand. This lets you tailor your stay to the subjects that interest you most.

Waterside scenery at Elsflether Sand

The Weser peninsula of Elsflether Sand lies between the Weser and Hunte rivers. It includes an expansive sandy beach and bird nesting sites. At the beach, swimming, sand play, and watching ships offer a range of activities. Swimming depends on river conditions and requires caution. The bird nesting sites and beach together shape this natural area; the beach combines time by the water with views of passing ships.

Cycling loops of different lengths

The “Elsflether Sand” circular tour is about 20 kilometers long. It crosses the Hunte barrage and the Weser peninsula to Dreisielen; the return to Elsfleth is via the Huntebrück lift bridge. If you want to plan a longer ride, the signposted “Marsch und Moor” tour offers an approximately 40-kilometer option. It starts at the quay in Elsfleth and passes through the half-timbered villages of Moorriem to the Gellen nature reserve. The two circular tours differ both in their approximate length and in their stops: one takes in Elsflether Sand and the lift bridge, while the other visits Moorriem and the nature reserve.

Another cycling option is the Hunteradweg, which starts at the Hunte barrage in Elsfleth and follows the Hunte to Oldenburg. This gives you a choice of one route along the Hunte and two routes expressly described as circular tours. You can start by choosing the one that suits your plans based on its distance and route.

Shipping Museum and town history

The Unterweser Shipping Museum in Elsfleth is a modern, interactive museum with numerous attractions. The Elsfleth building is one of the museum’s three exhibition buildings and is housed in the former Villa Steenken. The exhibition covers the diverse maritime development of the Oldenburg Lower Weser region in the 20th century. The building also houses a ship simulator that lets visitors steer a ship without a license. Opening hours are seasonal and may change; check the latest times before your visit.

The twelve stops on the Elsfleth audio tour are in the town center and tell the story of Elsfleth and its historical figures. The historical town tour offers another way to explore local history, covering important periods and historic buildings. The tour starts at the Black Duke monument in Rathausplatz and includes visits to the Heye Foundation and St. Nicolai Church. Dates are available on request. The church was expanded from a chapel around 1500 and enlarged in 1633 and 1690.

Day trips on the Weser

During the season, the Großherzogin Elisabeth operates day trips. They usually start in the morning from its berth at Elsfleth’s town quay. As the trips run seasonally, check the latest dates before adding them to your travel plans.
