The tithe barn offers a tangible introduction to Edemissen’s local history: its use changed from a storage building to a servants’ house and later to a local history room. Together with the church and cycling destinations in the municipality, it puts cultural history and a range of interests for day trips at the heart of the experience.

The Tithe Barn and Its History

A dendrochronological analysis dates the tithe barn to around 1766. Around 1834, the building was converted into a servants’ house; it remained inhabited until January 1, 1971. Following renovations that began in 1996, a local history room opened to the public there in 2000. These stages show how the building’s use changed over time.

The Tithe Barn Local History Museum regularly hosts exhibitions and events, including local heritage days, a midsummer festival and barn festivals. The program may change; check the dates for specific events before your trip. Group tours of the listed building and museum are available on request.

Tour of the Historic Old Village

A guided tour can be extended by about one kilometer through Edemissen’s historic old village. This extension includes Kapral’s Diek, Martin Luther Church and Wipperhof. Wipperhof is a Low German hall house, adding a specific building type to the local history. The additional section is part of the guided tour.

The approximately one-kilometer extension and the group tour of the listed building and museum are different ways to explore the area’s historic heritage. If you are planning a group tour, it is available on request; the extension through the old village is part of the guided tour.

Church and Art History

The church in Edemissen is documented as early as 1253. Felix M. Furtwängler added a much later artistic highlight: he completed twelve paintings on biblical themes for the church in 2002. The two dates mark different chapters in its history—from the earliest record of the church to a contemporary art commission.

There are various ways for groups of all ages to explore the church. Alongside the tithe barn, it offers another subject for groups interested in Edemissen’s cultural history.

Cycling Destinations in the Municipality

Cycling routes in the municipality of Edemissen lead to the Oil and Salt Trail, farm shops and swimming spots at Lake Wehnser. The Oelheim/Oedesse Oil and Salt Trail introduces the history of oil production in Oelheim. The destinations offer different experiences: the trail focuses on a historical subject, while farm shops and swimming spots appeal to other interests. The range of cycling destinations thus spans cultural history, shopping and swimming.

Another point of interest is the Via Romea, also known as the Rome Road. It passes through Rietze, a village in the municipality of Edemissen in the district of Peine. Rietze is therefore part of the pilgrimage route of Abbot Albert of Stade. This named pilgrimage route adds a distinct historical connection to the local history and cycling destinations.

Cultural Attractions in the Wider Peine Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Peine offers other cultural attractions, each with its own focus. The Protestant St. Jacobi Church in Peine was built in 1899 in the Neo-Gothic style; its original colorful wall and ceiling paintings have been restored. The Catholic Church of the Holy Angels in Peine was also built in the Neo-Gothic style, from 1866 to 1869, to plans by Haase, a government building officer from Hanover. Its furnishings include a remarkable 13th-century rood cross.

The Peine District Museum offers a different perspective. Covering 1,000 m², it tells the story of the town and region. Its focus includes everyday life in different periods, as well as the lives and work of craftspeople, industrial workers, townspeople and farmers. It also explores local characteristics of the Peine region. Thus, the wider travel destination of Peine highlights everyday and social history alongside religious architecture.
