Discover Peine through its architecture, everyday history, and a variety of outdoor experiences. In the city, neo-Gothic churches, the district museum, and the castle park each tell their own story of the past. Other places stand out for their historic parks, pilgrimage routes, and a forest adventure trail. If you’re looking for a hotel in Peine, you can plan your stay around whether you’re more interested in church art, regional history, or outdoor activities.

Peine: Churches, Everyday Life, and the Castle Park

The Protestant Church of St. James was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1899. Its original colorful wall and ceiling paintings have been restored. The Catholic Church of the Holy Angels was also built in the neo-Gothic style, from 1866 to 1869, based on plans by Hanoverian building councillor Haase. Among its notable works of art is a 13th-century triumphal cross. Peine thus has two churches with distinct historic features at its heart: one with restored paintings, the other with a medieval cross.

The Peine District Museum explores the history and stories of the city and region. Its 1,000 m² of exhibits cover everyday life in different eras, as well as the lives and work of craftspeople, industrial workers, townspeople, and farmers. Local features of the Peine region are also among its topics. The castle park complements this perspective with archaeological excavations and Peine’s old town: information boards provide details about excavation finds and the history of Peine Castle. The approaches to the city’s history are therefore quite different—from the museum’s focus on work and everyday life to the information in the park.

Distinctive Buildings and Parks

In Hohenhameln-Equord stands the Kleiner Petersdom, also known as Markuskirche: a smaller, true-to-scale replica of St. Peter’s Basilica, built on the Equord estate from 1697 onward. Visits must be arranged in advance by telephone. Schlosspark Vechelde offers a different kind of historic design. The former palace park has been preserved, and visitors can stroll past Baroque sculptures and rose beds.

The park at Alvesse Manor covers around 3.2 hectares and is laid out in the landscape style. Its design is characterized by broad lawns, wooded areas along the edges, and an interesting collection of trees. The ZeitRäume Museum in Bodenstedt, by contrast, focuses on interiors: housed in the main building of a three-sided farmstead built in 1878, it displays original furnishings preserved from various stylistic periods. Audio features and film projections bring developments from the imperial era through to the 1960s to life. Those interested in landscaped outdoor spaces will find a different focus here than visitors who want to explore historic living environments and ways of life.

Pilgrimage Routes, Mining History, and Forest Stops

In Lengede, a pre-booked tour of the “Miracle of Lengede” Museum begins with the everyday realities of mining and the “Miracle of Lengede.” The visit then continues to the memorial to the mine disaster. The two pilgrimage routes also offer different highlights. The Via Romea, also known as the Rome Road, passes through Rietze, a village in Edemissen in the district of Peine; Rietze is part of the pilgrimage route of Abbot Albert of Stade. The Brunswick Way of St. James runs through the mining park, past ponds and open-pit mines, into the old village of Lengede, and onward to Woltwiesche.

The forest adventure trail in Zweidorfer Holz offers a family outing with a range of stops, including forest sounds, stacked logs, a barefoot sensory path, and a forest bed, as well as animal long jump, tree stories, and a tree telephone. The Rausch Chocolate House in Peine sells high-quality chocolates at its factory outlet. If you’re planning a visit, check the current opening arrangements before you travel.
