Vechelde brings together cultural landmarks, pilgrim connections and the Aue river landscape. Baroque art and a memorial take centre stage in the palace park; Christ Church brings the history of the town centre to life. A pilgrim route and the description of the Aue also offer different points of interest. You can tailor your stay to culture, pilgrimage or nature.

Palace Park, Memorial and Churches

Vechelde Palace Park is home to the Abbot Jerusalem Memorial. It commemorates the Enlightenment theologian Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Jerusalem. The park also features Baroque sculptures, including a mythological depiction of Hades abducting Persephone. The memorial and sculptures combine a specific historical connection with a motif from mythology.

The Protestant Christ Church in the town centre offers a different perspective on local history. It dates from the 17th century. The town therefore brings together a range of cultural themes: Baroque artworks in the palace park and the history of a church building from the 17th century.

ZeitRäume Bodenstedt is located in Bodenstedt, in the municipality of Vechelde. It is an exhibition and meeting place established by the municipality. It is housed in a former farmstead with a pre-war inn, a bowling alley and a hall. Its historic setting distinguishes this place from the artworks in the palace park and the church in the town centre.

Pilgrim Routes and Events

St. Gereon at Wahler Weg 4 in Vechelde is designated as a pilgrimage site. The Way of St. James continues from Vechelde towards Lengede, passing through Bodenstedt. Those interested in pilgrim routes will find both a named pilgrimage site and a described route with its direction and an intermediate location.

The Vechelde Palace Park Days are also regular events. Their programme includes music and entertainment. If you would like to plan your stay around the Palace Park Days, check the specific event dates before making plans.

The municipality of Vechelde also lists a 12 km cycle tour, “Around Hasselkampsee.” The tour is another consideration when planning your stay, alongside the pilgrim route and cultural sites. As route information may be updated, it is advisable to check the latest tour information in advance.

Aue Floodplains and Wildlife

The Aue floodplains in the Vechelde area include grassland with meadows and pastures, forests, and willow and alder trees along the waterways. These landscape features create a varied scene of open spaces, woodland and riverside vegetation. Following improvements in water quality, typical flowing-water species have returned to the Aue, including caddisfly and mayfly larvae, dragonflies and fish.

White storks also characterise the Aue river landscape: every year they raise their young on a purpose-built nesting platform and forage in the meadows. Their annual nesting and feeding illustrate the connection between open meadows and wildlife. For nature enthusiasts, these features complement Vechelde’s cultural and pilgrim connections with a distinct landscape experience.

Getting There and Regional Highlights

Vechelde railway station offers train connections to Braunschweig and Hanover. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable before setting off. These two connections provide a guide for planning your journey, but do not indicate travel times or service frequency.

The wider Peine destination offers additional cultural attractions. In Peine, the Protestant St. Jakobi Church was built in 1899 in the Neo-Gothic style; its original colourful wall and ceiling paintings have been restored. The Catholic Church of the Holy Angels was built between 1866 and 1869 to plans by Haase, a government architect from Hanover, and contains a 13th-century triumphal cross. The Peine District Museum explores the history and stories of the city and region. Its 1,000 m² of exhibition space focuses on everyday life in different eras and on the lives and work of craftsmen, industrial workers, citizens and farmers.

ZeitRäume Bodenstedt is also part of the wider Peine destination. In the main building of a three-sided farmstead dating from 1878, the exhibition presents original furnishings preserved from various stylistic periods. Audio presentations and film projections bring developments from the imperial era through to the 1960s to life. This adds a closer look at the exhibition and its contents to the description of Bodenstedt’s historic setting.
