Georgsmarienhütte offers a range of ways to plan your stay: hiking trails, cultural trails, Kasinopark and the city’s steel history. When planning, consider whether you primarily want to spend time outdoors, explore a district on foot or by bike, or learn about industrial history. Each of the different trails and themes has its own focus.

Hiking trails and cultural trails: two different focuses

Five well-marked TERRA.tracks run through the city of Georgsmarienhütte. They were created in cooperation with the TERRA.vita Nature and UNESCO Geopark and are suitable for different fitness levels and hiking distances. When choosing a route, you can therefore take both the desired distance and your fitness level into account. Route details may be updated; check the information before setting out on a specific hike.

The cultural trails have a different focus. In the districts of Kloster Oesede, Holzhausen, Harderberg, Dröper and Holsten-Mündrup, you can explore them on foot or by bike at no charge. The cultural trail in the Holzhausen district is a suggested circular route of about seven kilometres; ten information boards explain the district’s history. If you are particularly interested in local history, this route offers a specific thematic focus. The TERRA.tracks, by contrast, offer options for different hiking distances and fitness levels.

Kasinopark and the Teutoburg Forest

Kasinopark, laid out in 1872, is home to about 50 different exotic and native tree species. There is a foot-wading facility at Holsteteich in the park. The variety of trees and the named location by the pond offer different ways to take in the park landscape.

The Teutoburg Forest also shapes Georgsmarienhütte’s landscape: its wooded ridges border the city directly. The bistro terrace at the outdoor pool in Panoramabad Georgsmarienhütte offers a particularly good view of the forest panorama. These are two different perspectives: the wooded ridges right on the city’s edge and the view from a specific terrace.

Villa Stahmer and the history of steel

Villa Stahmer houses the Museum of the City of Georgsmarienhütte. Its main focus is the city’s steel history. On the first floor, the museum presents an exhibition on the history of the ironworks. The exhibition therefore brings a specific part of the city’s history into focus.

Construction of the ironworks began in 1856 with the founding of a joint-stock company, which King George V and his wife Marie supported financially. This timeline links the history of the works to their founding, while keeping the focus on the later exhibition at the villa.

The history of the villa itself is also linked to industrial history: Robert Stahmer took up residence there in 1900; his railway signal works were located nearby in Oesede. The villa is one of the most beautiful houses in the Osnabrück district. In Georgsmarienhütte, the history of the ironworks thus intersects with that of a house that is also part of this historical context.
