In the Venner Moor, areas used for commercial peat extraction lie right next to restored areas. This contrast gives a clear impression of the landscape around Ostercappeln. Other destinations offer different highlights: a moorland path and cycling routes lead into the surrounding area, while churches, museums and archaeological finds offer insights into local history and ways of life in earlier times. If you are looking for accommodation in Ostercappeln, you can start by deciding which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
Moorland and cycling routes: different ways to explore the municipality
The seven-kilometre Venner Moor Path starts at Gasthaus Beinker and leads through the nature reserve. Its route links the moorland landscape to a specific starting point and offers one way to explore the area. The neighbouring areas where peat has been extracted and those that have been restored create a striking contrast. The municipality of Ostercappeln is also home to Lake Kronensee, which covers an area of 400,000 square metres.
Cyclists can also choose from several route descriptions, each with a different focus. The TERRA.trail 4 – DiVa-Tour Plus takes you by bike through Ostercappeln, Bad Essen and Bohmte. The OC 1 cycle route is 15.63 kilometres long and leads, among other places, to the Ludwig Windthorst Memorial in Hitzhausen. These routes offer two different ways to explore: a ride through several towns, or a route with a named destination within the municipality. Another option is the redesigned outdoor area at the Darpvenner Hünensteine, also in the municipality of Ostercappeln.
Church, Celtic finds and guided tours
St. Lambertus Church dominates the centre of Ostercappeln and is also the town’s landmark. The exhibition “Mystery of Schnippenburg – Legendary Finds from Celtic Times” offers a different historical perspective: finds from the exhibition are on display in the foyer of Ostercappeln Town Hall. A prominent building in the town centre and archaeological finds in a separate location thus offer two different ways to explore the past.
In the municipality, a public guided tour is held at the Schnippenburg Museum year-round on the first Sunday of every month at 2:30 p.m. Check the latest details with the provider before travelling. Year-round bookings are also available for guided tours at the museum, combined Iron Age experiences at the museum, the Schnippenburg excavation site and the Iron Age House, as well as school trips and group excursions. These offers can be booked; specific dates and availability may vary. The regular public tour and the bookable options are therefore different ways to learn about Schnippenburg and the Iron Age.
Venner Mill: milling technology, historic buildings and food
In Venne, the Venner Mill Village Museum is housed in a watermill built in 1725 on the Venner MĂĽhlenbach stream. Historic milling technology is demonstrated at its original site. The mill island is also home to historic buildings from the Venne area: a smithy, bakehouse, cottage, bleaching hut and farmhouse garden. The site offers several specific points of interest for a visit, from the mill building itself to the various historic structures in the outdoor area.
At the village museum, volunteer millers demonstrate how grain is cracked using millstones. Stone-oven bread, butter cake and Mühlentropfen liqueur are served in the “Pferdestall” (horse stable) at Venner Mill; check whether this is available before your visit. The Venner Folk Spring festival takes place every year in May. It is worth checking that year’s dates when planning your visit.
You can choose places to visit in Ostercappeln and the municipality based on your interests: moorland and cycle routes sit alongside the church, Celtic finds and the history of the mill. You can use these themes as a starting point when looking for accommodation and consider which ones you would like to explore during your stay.
