Attersee tells two different stories: it is an artificial lake created by sand extraction for the construction of the Hansalinie, and is also one of the official bathing waters in the city and district of Osnabrück. The bathing waters are monitored seasonally. If you are planning to swim, check the latest seasonal information before your visit. These details are relevant in different ways when planning: the lake’s origins explain its artificial character; seasonal monitoring is the practical point of reference for a swimming visit.

Cycling and hiking trails, walks and Gut Leye

The Attersee recreational area has a variety of cycling and hiking trails; before making specific plans, it is worth checking which options are currently available. Gut Leye offers a different way to get active: the estate is surrounded by extensive woodland, and you can go for walks around it. This gives you two different ways to plan your stay: choose from the cycling and hiking trails, or take a walk around the estate.

Gut Leye was established in the 15th century, when the Crosiers of Osterberg Monastery in the County of Tecklenburg acquired several individual farms in the Leye farming community in Atter, combined them into a large estate and operated monastic agriculture there. The two-storey manor house and its outbuildings were built in the Renaissance style in 1703. The chapel at Gut Leye was built in 1906. The 15th century thus marks the estate’s origins, while the dates 1703 and 1906 relate to the building history of the manor house and chapel.

Baracke 35: history and the idea of peace

The wooden barracks of Baracke 35 were originally built as Wehrmacht barracks between 1935 and 1937. In 2009, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture placed Baracke 35 under heritage protection. The idea of peace informs the types of events planned for Baracke 35; check individual event dates separately.

Osnabrück: more nature and culture

The wider destination of Osnabrück offers other distinct themes for visitors interested in nature and culture. The Botanical Garden of Osnabrück University opened in 1984 and is located in two former quarries on Westerberg. In the second, more natural quarry, native plants and animals are reclaiming this urban habitat. The rainforest house presents a section of the lowland rainforest of the Amazon Basin. The Green School offers guided tours and activity programmes for education for sustainable development; the programme may vary.

In Osnabrück’s historic town hall, the Peace Hall was one of the two venues of the Peace of Westphalia; alongside Münster, the peace treaties ending the Thirty Years’ War were signed there. In 1643, at the beginning of the peace negotiations, St. Mary’s Church served as a secret meeting place for Swedish and Danish envoys. They met there for confidential discussions to avoid being observed by spies.

The Museumsquartier Osnabrück brings together four buildings from different periods. Osnabrück’s old town stretches from Heger Tor via the market square to Hasestraße. It still contains around thirty stoneworks, most of which are hidden behind the street frontage or in courtyards.
